Three Principles of Great Accomplishments

This past week has been amazing! Our oldest son made his Major League debut with the Milwaukee Brewers Wendie and I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate. Our daughter is in medical school Morsani College of Medicine and our youngest son is a minor league player for the Minnesota Twins

Each of them inspire me beyond what words can describe. A dear friend recently asked what I thought are the roots of their accomplishments. As I have pondered his question and thought back over the years, I believe there are three key reasons.

  1. Dream Big: they found what they loved and saw themselves achieving a big dream.
  2. Work: they put in the work to develop the skill set necessary for great accomplishment.
  3. NEVER listen to the naysayers: especially don't ever naysay yourself. they learned to be mentally strong and ignore the negative chatter.

Each of them have always been engaged in team sports. From my perspective, I have always found it interesting that the leader of the team, the coach, has one sole job and that is to help the player/team member maximize their potential and help the team. Great coaches spend time developing their players and in return get the reward of a winning team. Coaches who don't listen, develop, and even debate with their team never put together winning teams. We are so grateful for the amazing coaches and mentors they have each had along the way.

Each of us likely have a career dream and dedicate time and focus to develop the necessary skill set. In a leadership role, I believe we need to see ourselves as coaches; a role that demands we forget ourselves and look to the dreams, skillsets, and mindsets that each teammate brings to the team and then do ALL we can to help them chase their dream, develop the skill set, and never demean them or naysay them. If we think they aren't rising to the occasion, our job becomes to care about and coach them to help them be their best!

Our kids have been great examples to me and have reinforced the need to dream big, put in the work, and never listen to the naysayers!

THIS is a huge accomplishment. Many don't truly understand what it takes to make it to that level. The mental disciplines, work ethic, the naysayers (as mentioned), crazy schedules, routines, saying no to many things you want to do, the list goes on an on. Way to go! I'm happy for you and your family.
