Three-Point Bending (or Flexural Test) in ANSYS -2024

Welcome to the 18th episode of my engineering exploration series! In this article, we will delve into the mechanics of material, focusing on the distinctions between isotropic and anisotropic materials and comparing the elastic and plastic properties of various substances. We will also simulate a three-point bending test, commonly referred to as a flexural test, to distinguish between elastic and plastic material properties. This test is crucial for determining the flexural strength and modulus of metals, polymers, and composites.

Throughout this article, we will also explore stress-strain curves for homogeneous metallic material subjected to quasistatic loading.

Three-Point Bending Test

The three-point bending test is a fundamental method used to determine the flexural strength and flexural modulus of metals, polymers and composites. In this test, a specimen is placed between two supporting pins and subjected to an increasing load at a single midpoint, with the corresponding displacements recorded. The most widely used standard for this test is ISO 7438 (Fourth edition). Below is a schematic diagram of the test setup:

The symbol and their descriptions used in the test are summarized in the table below.
