The Three Phases of Career

While on holiday this past month, We met a retired corporate executive who is now partnering with his son in a private driving business in Spain/Portugal. While his driving and historical knowledge of the region was fantastic, he also had some great wisdom to share about career, life and growth. One of the interesting thoughts he shared was around the three phases that most of us go through during our career.

Phase One-At the start of our careers/early days of working, we have Good Health, some extra Time but no Money. This is seen as the time of building.

Phase Two-As we near the height of our careers/pre-retirement, we still have Good Health and now have Money after a long prosperous career but we still don't have Time because you are loaded up with work and life obligations.

Phase Three-Finally at the end/post-career we have plenty of Time and Money but our bodies begin to fail us and thus we don't have the Good Health that we had when we were younger.

Being mindful to take advantage of how to do balance the three over the course of a career is important to make sure that you both stop and smell the flowers while on the journey and to be careful to take proper care of yourself so that you can enjoy the fruits of the sacrifices you made along the way.

P.S.- This is not an advocacy for Work/Life balance because that is a myth. There is not a choice between Work and Life. There is only Life. How we structure ourselves while living Life is where balance is achieved.
