About seamless pipes and welded pipes, what do you know about the differences between them? This article will show you in detail from four aspects (definition, production process, photos and market price), just spend three minutes with me and there's a surprise at the end of this article.
Seamless Pipe (SMLS pipe)
Seamless pipe, as the name suggests, is a pipe without a seam or a weld-joint. Seamless Steel Pipe is made from a solid round steel billet which is heated and pushed or pulled over a form until the steel is shaped into a hollow pipe. The hollow pipe is then extruded through a die and mandrel combination to reduce the outside diameter and to expand the inside diameter.
ERW Pipe
ERW pipe is an acronym for Electrical Resistance Welding pipe. ERW pipes are manufactured by cold forming of steel coil into a round cylindrical shape. In the initial times, it was done with the low-frequency A.C. current to heat the edges. Now, since 1970 the low-frequency process changed to high-frequency A.C. current to produce a higher quality weld.
LSAW Pipe
LSAW pipes means Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded Pipes. The LSAW pipe diameter range is larger than ERW, normally from 16 inch to 60 inch, 406mm to 1500mm. It has been widely applied in the oil and gas pipelines, specially required large diameter and thick wall pipe with high strength and long distance. Meanwhile it has been used in construction of structure that need tough strength, water treatment, thermal industry, bridge building, etc.
SSAW Pipe
SSAW Pipe means Spiral Submerged Arc-Welding Pipe, also called HSAW pipe, welding line shape like a helix. SSAW pipe is spiral welded where the LSAW is longitudinally welded. Its welding seam is in a spiral line. The SSAW pipe diameter range is from 20 inch to 100 inch, 406 mm to 2540 mm. The advantage is we can get the different diameter of SSAW pipes with the same size of the steel strip.
In general, for market price in China, SMLS pipe > LSAW pipe > ERW pipe > SSAW pipe.
