The Three-Legged Stool

Think of the success of an idea as a three-legged stool.

Each leg of the stool represents a necessity.

So, how is a stool used to validate a concept or idea? They share the same structure. With any one of these legs of the stool missing, the stool simply cannot stand.

What do each of these legs represent?

Leg #1- The Idea.

Leg #2- Capital/Funding.

Leg #3- Resources/Connections.

With any one of these legs missing, stability is gone. Therefore the stool cannot stand.

This represents the foundation of an idea in order for it to be stabilized. I believe this is why many Start-ups either end up failing along the way or like most, don't even get the chance to hit the market. This three-legged stool not only represents a companies starting point, its also the end point. Keeping the stool stable is the key. Loosing one of these legs or weakening them along the way is also a possibility (Ex: Loss of funding, Bad ideation). Which would then weaken the company, eventually causing it to fall, IF the leg is not repaired or replaced.

You may have the best idea in the world. Unfortunately, any way you look at it, if any one of these legs are missing, it makes it extremely hard to execute due to lack of the stability for the entire scope of the idea.

In the end, odds are your idea may resemble something like this...

Go ahead, feel free to take a seat!
