The hectic fall semester is finally over! Want to treat yourself to some enjoyable, thought provoking, and energy-boosting reading during the holidays? Here is a list of my top 3 books that I found transformative and entertaining, which it helped me change on both personal and professional levels. This is an assortment of non-fiction books that came out in 2016 from some of my favorite authors. These are not just the newest bestsellers. I truly believe these types of books can help us as career educators start challenging the conventional wisdoms we share with our students.
1. Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life, Sep 2016
Just came out of the oven this September! Bill Burnett and Dave Evans wrote this masterpiece after years of teaching the most popular class at Stanford. It is simply applying design thinking to life. Know your dysfunctional beliefs, such as following your passion, and learn how to reframe those beliefs to make them life enablers. The book has deeply changed how I think about life choices and it should be considered as the the career bible of the the decade. A must read by students who are serious about pursuing a career and meaningful work.
2. Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, May 2016
You probably have seen her TED. Angela Duckworth, a passionate psychologist, explains the theory of grit and self-control with a ginius mix of science and personal stories. How can perseverance and hard work matter more than IQ in predicting success? The New York Times called Duckworth "the psychologist who has made 'grit' the reigning buzzword in education-policy circles." If you are an educator who wants to reach the heart and mind of students, follow the action plans in the book.
3. Originals: How Nonconformists Move the World, Feb 2016
This is another counter-intuitive, science-backed and entertaining manuscript by Wharton’s single highest rated professor. It’s solid research on how people can champion new ideas, the real truth about procrastination, how leaders can fight groupthink, and what successful non-conformists have in common. This book added many tools to my toolbox to how to challenge my students to think differently.

About half way through "Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life". Bill Burnett and David Evans provide great examples and exercises throughout this book. Their design students are very blessed to have them and I am grateful they took this course and turned it into a book so that others could be benefactors of their work. I highly recommend it as well! Iyad, I always appreciate your reading recommendations, Thanks!
