These three habits will give you more energy
If you ever feel like there’s too much on your plate then, staying up late to push through may seem like you’ll be able to squeeze an extra hour or two of productivity out of the day.
It’s not.
Meaningful work doesn’t occur when you're exhausted,
AND
what you choose to model for your family, team, and clients will either contribute to or end the culture of overwhelm.
The routines and habits that will help you build an optimal foundation may vary from meditation to journaling to exercise and these three habits could transform your life as they did for my client Dani.
She was working as an EMT while also running a catering business. Most nights she was lucky if she got 4 hours of sleep. Once she trained her body to sleep for more than 7 hours, she was able to double her business growth and be more present in her relationships.
Sleep: Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep will strengthen your immune system and elevate your memory. Create a short bedtime routine to prepare yourself for sleep. Most importantly, turn off the TV and your phone at least an hour before bed. Blue light from the screen disrupts your REM sleep so even if you're getting the 7-9 hours, you’ll wake up not feeling rested.
Water: Being hydrated increases cognitive function and if you're prone to headaches, you could eliminate them just by drinking more water. Work up to drinking about half your body-weight in water every day.
Breathe: Most of us breathe very shallowly and practically stop breathing when stressed out. A lack of oxygen may be affecting your performance because you may not be giving your brain and body enough oxygen to function fully. Deep breathing is the single, most effective method to get your body to relax and can be done in less than 5 minutes.
My personal favorite is the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique where you inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts and exhale for 8 counts. Repeat 3-4 times and it will oxygenate your brain.
I know you’ve heard these before. I know they sound simple. Despite their simplicity, sleeping, being hydrated and breathing deeply and regularly are the difference between thriving or not.
