Three Goals to Eradicate Poverty
Solving one of the world's greatest problems: Poverty
The Faith Driven movement has recently launched their “Solving the World's Greatest Problems” program.
When you become part of the 5-2-50 community, you become part of a movement that is solving one of the world's greatest problems: Poverty.?
Our approach to doing our part in that, is to challenge founders of small businesses to set for themselves three goals:
We provide relevant and useful tools and content, and a community of practice that support each other in our journey of achieving these goals.
Grow to at least 50 people: Create Good New Jobs
We believe that the only sustainable way to eradicate poverty is by creating good jobs; that the only way to sustainably create good jobs is through growing businesses; and that the businesses with the most potential to grow are small businesses of at least 5 people that have been running for at least 5 years. There are many ways in which you can participate in this, but at the heart of it all are these businesses that 5-2-50 (Five to Fifty) gets its name from: Businesses of at least 5 people, that have been running for at least five years, that have the ambition to grow to at least 50 people.?
So that is the first challenge we set before each small business founder that joins the 5-2-50 community: Set a goal for yourself to grow to at least 50 people over the next 5 years.?
But we also challenge you to not just create any new jobs.?
Broken people create broken workplaces, and broken workplaces break people. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, that we may experience healing, and then build workplaces of wholeness. We challenge you to strive to build a workplace that inspires and engages people to bring their best to work, and to become all that they've been created to be, in their vocation. Strive to build a business that can pay a decent living wage, and take good care of its people. Don't just create jobs. Create GOOD jobs.
Free the Founder
We also believe that the greatest constraint on jobs growth in any economy are startup entrepreneurs. If you have started a business from scratch, and grown it to employ a handful of people, full-time or part time, then you are one of our rarest and most precious resources in our society. Starting up a business from nothing is one of the most difficult things in the world to do. Even just starting up and growing it to five people, is an enormous feat. Constraint management teaches us that we should not waste the capacity of our constraints. In our work with hundreds of founders over the years, we've come to realise that many founders have ideas of businesses they still want to start. However, many of them are stuck in the day to day running of their business, and do not have time to even think about what else they could be doing, or the next business they could be starting up.?
This doesn't have to be the case. With the right systems, processes and structures in place, you can free yourself up from your business, so that you have the time and energy to begin to build towards Your Next.?
So this is the second goal we challenge you to set for yourself, and we call it “Free the Founder:”?
Build your business in such a way that you can leave your business for at least 90 days, and when you get back, it will be at least in as good, if not better shape than what it was when you left it.?
ZAR 10 Million Net Profit After Tax
Lastly, in order for this movement to accelerate, we need to generate wealth that can be reinvested in new businesses, as well as in the growth of existing businesses around us. Founders who want to step out and start new businesses will need capital and cashflow to sustain the startup process. This then brings us to the final goal we challenge each 5-2-50 business to set for itself:?
Get to a consistent ZAR 10 000 000 Net Profit After Tax?
(± US$ 540 000 at the time of this writing).
Three Goals, One Purpose: Eradicating Poverty
These three goals feed each other. If you have 50 people, you can create a structure that enables you to run processes and systems that can release you from the need to run your business from day to day. If the business is generating a strong net profit, you can afford to step away from it, and not require it to pay you a salary to keep working, whilst also having the resources to work on your next, and buffer for the business to sustain itself through tough times.
And so this becomes the platform for us to keep growing our impact, building wealth, creating good jobs, and eradicating poverty.?
