In the rapid-paced and evolving landscape of modern business, the need for companies to undergo transformation has become a matter of survival. For organizations to stay ahead of the curve, identifying opportunities, challenges, and risks is crucial.
Analysis, the first step in the business transformation process, guides decision-making and paves the way for successful evolution. This analysis can unfold on two distinct fronts, each requiring different tools and models: marketplace competitiveness and operational capability.
Marketplace Competitiveness
If the purpose of your effort is to increase your organization’s strategic advantage, we need to begin with how the organization competes within the marketplace. Strategic assessments often take place through collaborative sessions fueled by market research and various mental models. The goal is to unearth insights that foster a comprehensive understanding of the competitive landscape. Ideally, this process should also identify areas in the market that are vacant of competitors, often referred to as “blue ocean” or “greenspace” that you can leverage for strategic advantage.
Tools and mental models that are often used for this are SWOT analyses, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrices, competitive landscape charts, strategy maps, five forces analyses, balanced scorecards, Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), gap analyses, constraints analyses and many others. We will explore mental models that can be used and the pitfalls and logical fallacies to be avoided in future articles.
Operational Capability
When the goal of organizational change lies in enhancing operational capability, a thorough approach becomes critical to pinpoint areas ripe for improvement. This usually involves mapping business processes including the movement of people, information, and goods for the purpose of uncovering inefficiencies, ineffectiveness, waste, or obsolescence that may impede productivity. Fortunately, a range of structured quality disciplines offer tools and guidance in this process. The Deming model, Total Quality Management, and Lean Six Sigma are prominent methodologies renowned for their systematic approach to process optimization and continuous improvement.
The Deming model, which emphasizes continuous improvement and quality management. Named after renowned statistician W. Edwards Deming, this model advocates for a systematic approach to problem-solving, focusing on process improvement and statistical analysis.
Total Quality Management (TQM), another widely adopted framework, prioritizes customer satisfaction and organizational excellence. TQM principles emphasize employee involvement, process optimization and a commitment to continuous improvement across all levels of the organization.
Lean Six Sigma combines the principles of Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies to streamline processes, reduce waste and improve overall efficiency. By identifying and eliminating defects, errors, and variations in processes, Lean Six Sigma enables organizations to achieve higher levels of quality and operational excellence.

Intuition can also serve as a valuable tool in problem identification. By tapping into their instincts and experience, individuals can uncover hidden issues that may elude formal frameworks.
Future articles will explore both the mental modes and the tools used in process improvement.
Whether relying on established methodologies or intuitive insights, organizations can effectively diagnose operational challenges and pave the way for enhanced efficiency and sustainable growth.
In today's fast-paced business environment, transformation is not just a choice but a necessity for survival. Analysis is the first stage of this process, guiding decision-making and laying the foundation for the next stages in the process of successful transformation. Whether assessing marketplace competitiveness or operational capability, a structured approach is essential for organizations to thrive amidst change.
