Three Changes To Your LinkedIn Profile That Help You Beat Unemployment

Three Changes To Your LinkedIn Profile That Help You Beat Unemployment

Unemployed job seekers have more difficult challenges than currently employed job seekers, so it's even more critical that you show up in recruiter searches on LinkedIn.

That's why I'm commonly asked by unemployed job seekers what you can change in your LinkedIn profile to show up in searches and get noticed by recruiters more often.

Here are some changes that unemployed job seekers need to make to your LinkedIn profile, to help you get noticed by employers more often:

  • Show Up In Searches: Use the headline on your LinkedIn profile to help you show up in searches by including the most common job title you're searching for. Including this information in your profile not only helps you show up in searches, it's displayed in search results below your name and it's one of the first things recruiters see on your LinkedIn profile.
  • Give Recruiters A Reason To Read Your Profile: Use the About section to give recruiters a reason to want to read your profile. Then prove that you have what they are searching for, giving an example of what you did at your best ... Choose one that's relevant to the position you are searching for.
  • Rank Higher In Search Results: Include a current position with an end date of present - Use the job title you are searching for, include company name as "open to work" (or the name of your personal consulting firm if you've done consulting/project work while you've been in transition). LinkedIn's algorithm is biased to rank users with current positions higher in search results, so make sure you build that advantage into your profile.

And because I like to overdeliver, here's a fourth change ...

  • Use The Open To Work Frame: Using the Open To Work frame on your profile photo, and the hashtag #opentowork in your about section can get you noticed by recruiters with immediate needs, where the hiring manager needs to hire someone NOW. Making it clear that you're Open To Work suggests that you are likely to be available immediately, and may not even have to give a 2 week (or longer) notice to your employer that you're leaving.

These are some initial changes you'll want to make to your LinkedIn profile to beat unemployment more quickly.

But there are many other improvements you can make to your resume, interview, job search, and LinkedIn strategies that can help you find your next job faster when you're unemployed.

Excellent article! I've retired from IT. I am looking for some very part-time work though, as a chat facilitator on group Zoom calls. So, should I create a current position with an end date of present, and on that current position, use job title of: Chat Facilitator at company: Open to Work? Thank you.
