Dear Winner,
It has been said that everybody is a salesperson. Those of you who are married know this fact for sure each time you negotiate where to go for dinner, what to eat, or whether a new piano in a house where nobody plays the thing is really a good investment!
When my wife and I became parents 18 or so years ago, we came to appreciate that even ideas need to be sold, especially to children. You see, it turns out that, in every conversation, a transaction is taking place.
Someone is selling and someone is being sold.
So when my son, Matthew, called me this past Monday afternoon to tell me that he had withdrawn from college after only sitting in on his two first classes of his first day…
He had some selling to do!
He told me that his worst fears had been realized. The first class was math of some sort. The teacher plainly explained to the students that she did not expect them to retain or even learn anything this semester.
The reason for the course was to keep them on track so that they could take the classes they really need in two years to get a diploma in their chosen major.
Saying this to my kid, who likes to use his hands, keep active, and feel useful, was as good as feeding him poison. I could hear in his voice that he was done right then.
The second class was about the same but he used the time to plan his immediate and long term future.
1. Go to the admissions office.
2. Get the money back.
3. Eat! (He is an 18-year-old after all!)
4. Write down a business plan and make calls to execute said plan.
5. Finally, call all the family members who have invested in his education for his entire lifetime and disappoint them. These calls were all personalized and he gave different rationales to each family member, knowing what was important to them.
For instance, in my case, he said, “Daddy, you knew I was going to quit eventually. I thought, why not do it quickly and save the money?” Pretty good sales pitch to a cheap guy like me.
I have had five days to deal with the turn of events that took place this week and have concluded that in this instance…
I have been sold!
Matthew, my son, I could not be more proud of you right now. More than pride, you have my admiration. I am amazed that a person of your age can function so smoothly with calmness, confidence, and determination to do good works in the world.
The amount of courage it took to make the decisions and calls you made give me great comfort that you will be just fine in life. I have no worries with you, Matthew.
You have some attributes that most top producers work a lifetime to possess:
· You are a man of action.
· You are a man who finds a way to succeed, instead of finding excuses.
There is one more attribute that most top producers enjoy; the combination of all three virtually guarantee your wild success.
Here’s the tip: Be a lifelong learner. Learn something new every day about your craft. Become a master and a teacher. Education comes in the form of books, audios, videos, conferences, networking events, and sitting down and talking to crusty old people like your father once in a while. The more you continually learn, the more you will continually earn.
Best Wishes,
The Deej

7 年Absolutely great story from frustration to learning how to develop and grow. Reminds me, "this is my way, what is your way? The way does not exist" heard this from Wayne Dyer. Miss the man's mentoring of us all. Thanks for sharing a personal story Deej
