THE THREAT TO DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA COULD NOT BE GREATER

In his most recent speech at a rally organised by Turning Point Action, Donald Trump urged the crowd to “Vote. Vote early. Vote absentee. Vote on Election Day. I don't care how but you have to get out and vote. And again Christians, get out and vote just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what? It'll be fixed. It'll be fine. You won't have to vote in any more my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you. Get out. You got to get out and vote. In 4 years. You don't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed So good. You're not going to have to vote.”

This has to be seen and heard to be believed. So listen to it from 54.23 minutes into this speech here.

“He’s talking about ending our democracy and installing a Christian nation,” said civil rights attorney Andrew L. Seidel. And NBC legal commentator Katie Phang said, “In other words, Trump won’t ever leave the White House if he gets re-elected.”

The comments from Seidel and Phang would seem outrageous had Trump not previously repeatedly made known his admiration for authoritarian leaders, including heaped praise on dictators including Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán and Kim Jong-un. And he has said of himself that he would be “a dictator on day one” if given a second four-year term in the White House.

His intentions could not be clearer. The threat to democracy in America could not be greater. The country is certainly at a turning point.

I’m not sure this message will be successful. The left already knows this. The right doesn’t care, or at least they view it as entirely expendable and subordinate to their agenda. There has always been a large contingent of Americans who believe it is cool to be revolutionary presumably because of our founding. Influencers on the far right have long been perfecting the propaganda that our democratic institutions are pointedly counterproductive. . The social media echo chambers that have become ubiquitous over the last decade have enabled this propaganda to win the day across the right wing of American politics and their notional new world alliance with authoritarian regimes around the world. Thus the people who have succumbed to this global authoritarian propaganda actually believe it is appropriate to dismantle the current system of democratic government as well as the strongest global alliance for democracy in history (from NATO to the pacific rim). At the same time, an abundance of evidence has emerged that a different, POSITIVE message is winning the day and building like a tsunami. America wants to smile again and regain the hope and energy of youth. Let the rhetoric of far right become increasingly absurd.
