Threads vs Twitter: Who do you like?

The use of Threads, Meta’s new rival to Twitter, took off on July 5, with 30 million users signed up in its first 24 hours. It’s now crossed the? 100 million users threshold to become the fastest-growing app ever.?

But what’s the appeal of a seemingly identical platform to Twitter??

Since Twitter was purchased by Elon Musk in late 2022, the app has experienced a number of issues that has led to users abandoning the platform.?

For one, many users are frustrated by the new limit on tweets that can be consumed in a day. Further discord occurred when Twitter Blue, the $8 per month subscription plan replaced the “verified” account feature. This caused mass chaos as folks purchased unaffiliated brand name verifications and tweeted things like this:?

Others are fed up with the lack of action to prevent or remove hate speech and other harmful rhetoric that’s been posted. Musk also reinstated previously banned accounts that were removed for this type of messaging. There has also been a mass exodus of advertisers from the platform, raising questions around how the app will continue to profit.??

To top it all off, Musk has announced the rebrand of the company to X Corp — giving the twitter bird his swan song. #JusticeforLarryTBird #ByeByeBirdie

You can understand why a shiny new social media platform with most of the same features — and an increase in character limit — without the poor user experience, would flourish.?

But that’s not exactly what’s happening.?

Just a few weeks since its launch, the platform has seen a dramatic dip in active users, down 70% from its peak on July 7th.? Time spent on the app has also dropped off considerably, from 19 minutes for apple users and 21 minutes for android, to four minutes and five minutes, respectively. Twitter, on the other hand, has kept daily active users at around 200 million and 30 minutes as the average time on the platform.

Of course, for any social media platform, it takes time and updates, to really take off. Twitter took nearly three years after its launch to become mainstream. Facebook itself took four years to surpass Myspace as the most visited social media platform.?

We polled our LinkedIn audience to see who’s on Threads. Overwhelmingly, folks responded that their brand wasn’t currently using the platform. The reasons ranged from different audiences between Twitter and Instagram (where Threads pulls their audience from), to feeling immediately disengaged, to unfamiliarity with the platform.
