Threads, from Meta Platforms, was rolled out as a rival to Twitter. Leveraging its Instagram user base to promote the new platform, Meta made it easy for Instagrammers to create a Threads profile. And within an hour of its release, Threads surpassed 1 million users.?
The platform would essentially transfer the user’s data directly from Instagram. This integration extended from sharing profiles, followers and settings to even account management. But there was a catch - if one wished to delete their Threads profile, their Instagram account would have to follow suit.
However, this has now changed. The Verge has reported that Meta is finally rolling out a way for users to delete Threads profiles without being required to delete their Instagram account.
The Threads app has been facing backlash for its user privacy issues and spammy content. The app also doesn’t have direct messaging or a sophisticated search function. Several users have also raised issues with the app overworking in the background, affecting their phone’s battery life.
It is a given that Instagram’s popularity far surpasses Threads. Although Threads hit 100 million users within a week, the platform grappled with declining daily active users and average user time. So, Meta leveraged Instagram to keep users retained on Threads, partially taking away users' will of whether they want to stick to the platform or not.
