Considerations for incorporating threads in your parts to ensure optimal performance and durability.
When incorporating threads, it is important to pay attention to the tolerance and fit of threads to ensure they meet the required specifications for performance and reliability.
Types of threads:
Internal: These are threaded features within a hole.
External: These are threaded features on the outside of a cylindrical part.
Thread placement:
On-axis: Threads are aligned along the central axis of the part.
Axial: Threads are aligned parallel to the axis but positioned elsewhere on the part.
Radial: Threads are oriented perpendicular to the axis.

Alternatives to threading
While threading is an excellent method for creating strong connections between components, it is not always the best option for all materials. Weaker materials, such as certain plastics and aluminum, often struggle to maintain a strong thread on their own. In these cases, additional measures are necessary to ensure the integrity of the connection. For example, a disk can be inserted through the two parts as an extra safety measure to enhance the connection's strength.
Design Considerations:
Material compatibility, ensure that the material of the threads is compatible with the part material to prevent galvanic corrosion and other issues. Load distribution is also an important measure to take into consideration. Properly design the thread engagement length to distribute the load evenly and prevent precocious failure.
