Advent of ChatGPT

The advent of ChatGPT has spread like wildfire and ignited the fire of imagination in everyone. At a time when Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram are filled with content about ChatGPT no wonder I stumbled on a Youtube video about "How to make $5000 per month using ChatGTP". The video intrigued me and opened my eyes to the possible ChatGPT uses, it was a step-by-step guide on how to create an ebook, on the most popular topics, easily and efficiently. The popular topics were fed by ChatGPT, and so was the structure of the book down to the very content of the book. All that the user had to do is, create an ebook, host it on a platform, and hope people buy it.?

With Microsoft acquiring a 49% stake in OpenAI which is ChatGPT's parent company - let's assume the technology will be deployed in many product lines. The most obvious fit for the deployment is creating a search engine to rival Google. As long as the underlying technology is used as aid it can be a huge benefit while avoiding the complications which come when the technology is used as a source of answers itself. What are some of the complications that we need to look at??

First the answers generated by ChatGPT or let's say mostly literary answers generated seem to be an amalgamation of publicly available literature on the subject. While I can search for the same data on Google, where ChatGPT differs from Google, is in how it applies its own understanding on top of the data set and presents its version of the answer. If the technology is rolled out in form of a tool in itself rather than an enhancement the source of the data will need to be pointed out and backlinked to gain some credibility for the answers. There is a possibility of the ChatGPT answers in themselves become so reliable the backlink or references will not be needed, but, in that case, the original creators of the information will have to come up with mechanisms to safeguard their intellectual property. Imagine ChatGPT referring to a Ph.D. thesis to create its answer. Without a safeguard for intellectual property, the thesis writer will never get the due credit without references or backlinks.?

We will have to look at the legal implications of a single tool scavaging the entire internet for data and using it without crediting the original creators.

One way is to have new ways to Copywrite the content users create and have mechanisms to track violations but I am sure there are more creative ways to tackle the problem.

The more important point to consider is can ChatGPT or let's say any other AI applications recreate human endeavors like writing, painting, and singing. On the surface they can, with a huge set of data in theory any human endeavor can be mimicked. But there lies the key term, mimicked. No matter how close an AI application Mimics humans in photography, art, literature, and singing it remains mimicked.?

Humans do not value true art for it is beauty alone, we value it for the artist, for the human in him who has his unique take on things. Reduce the human from the art the poignant painting becomes a cruel joke a cheerful picture becomes a facade. It is the artist who captures these scenes from an individual human's perspective and that is what we value in art. Similarly, it is the experience of a human presenting any data that is valued and not an amalgamation of data.?

So what do I really think of ChatGPT and AI applications? AI is now real and present. The technology will bring in unimaginable benefits and applications as we explore new avenues to apply it. The wheels of inventions have now turned and there is no going back. On the one hand, I see that there are countless applications of AI that will be fruitful and necessary, however, other the other hand, I do not think AI will replace very basic human endeavors. They will be certainly some of the most powerful tools we ever used but we humans will ensure they remain just that, "Tools". Or so I wish.?
