Thoughts of Self-Assurance
Claiming Self-Assurance as my 11th CliftonStrength is a major factor of my life. I have leaned on Self-Assurance many times while growing up (before I even knew it was a Strength) and in present times when I’ve been able to lean on it very intentionally. Self-Assurance is the belief that I know what the right decision is. I never doubt the directions I go towards – I am confident that I am able – able to do whatever I need to do.
As we all know, the CliftonStrengths assessment identifies our natural talents that give us energy. An exercise I like to use while coaching is to encourage the individual to reflect on how their Strengths may have been visible when they were a child. Usually, we can look back and identify how these natural talents (energy sources) have always been shining through who we are. Once we have spotted the presence of these themes, it is then up to us as individuals to invest in and develop them to become Strengths.
Talent x Investment = Strength
Through the theme of Self-Assurance – I am energized by the knowledge that I have my own perspective in this world and that I am the one person who can truly make decisions for my life. Through an insightful coaching session, a coach once enlightened me that because of my Self-Assurance, I am “fueled by doubt.” I have those words written in many journals and on my whiteboard on the wall because they inspire me. As I wrote above, I am certain that I am able – and when others are less certain, I am only more motivated to prove them wrong.
One of the tips for living and thriving with Self-Assurance is to: Set ambitious goals. Don’t ever feel as if your goals are a form of settling. I can attest to this as my goals are sometimes scoffed at and seen as out of reach. Because I lead with a strong influence of Self-Assurance, the disbelief fuels me. Plus, the external disbelief does not affect my personal belief. I am confident that these seemingly unattainable goals can be achieved…perhaps with a little luck at times.
This past week, when I prioritized my Self-Assurance, I worked on re-writing and re-focusing my goals. It was an energizing exercise because I found myself growing in excitement and momentum to continue striving for these achievements.
Whether you have Self-Assurance or a team member does, being around someone with this theme is an exciting journey that will most likely involve risks with a strong, solid sense of leadership!
Next week, I’ll be reflecting on my Maximizer – a strength that always aims for excellence.
