Thoughts of Millie 2.0: Shaking the Niche

I’m expanding my newsletter, yay!

TLDR: I'm keeping my LinkedIn newsletter for marketing, but writing about Marketing, Creativity, Lifestyle, Wellness, and Culture over on Substack.

Side note: LinkedIn doesn't let me transfer over or even have access to my subscriber email list (something I want to change in 2024) - so I can't transfer my subs over myself. Okay, let's get into it...

One year ago I started this newsletter on LinkedIn, and never looked back. I’m eternally grateful for it because it introduced me to what could be. Today, that newsletter has 1,921 subscribers. It’s crazy to think that something that started as a side project, has reached close to 2K people that are interested in what I have to say, like…what???

As I’ve continued to write, I’ve continued to grow; not only only as a LinkedIn creator, but also as a person. I’d like to start off this post by saying I’m so thankful for LinkedIn newsletters, because this has given me a platform that opened up an interest I didn’t know I had (writing for a newsletter blog).?

Over the year(s), I’ve evolved as a human, creative strategist, and coach. And the truth is that I’ll always enjoy talking about marketing, but that won’t always be what I’ll want to write about, y’know? So I’ve decided to expand my topics on ??… Substack.?

Since I was a kid, I’ve always been the creative type. And throughout my life there have been experiences that have shaped me (and you) into the human(s) we are today. Personally, I’m not a niche girlie, rather a multi-faceted person that’s continuously interested in different topics and always aiming to evolve (it must be the Sagittarius in me).

While society tries to push the “niche” agenda, it’s one I’ve never really found myself adapting to. And if you’re a creative reading this, I want you to know that’s perfectly okay.

Creatives aren’t meant to be kept in a box, four walls, and entrapped into honing in on being good at one thing. It reminds me Maya Angelou’s Caged Bird poem. I was once asked by a creative coaching client how I picked one area, to land where I am today. The truth is that I never have, and the topics that interest me have always been interconnected and holistic to the topic of a creative.

I love marketing, lifestyle, wellness, and culture. All topics of which I feel fall under the overarching theme of being a creative person. So that’s what this newsletter is about.

As a strategist, I have to be honest that there will be some benefits to this as well:?

1- Email List: I’ll finally own the email list. Here on LinkedIn, I can’t access my subscriber email list, and as a writer, I feel like that takes away some newsletter controls I wish I had access to. I’ve grown this project to 1900+ subscribers and don’t even know my subscribers emails. Bummer!?

2- Sections: I’m so excited to create sections for my new newsletter blog on Substack! On LinkedIn, I’m unfortunately unable to section off my topics into categories. Like I said before, I really enjoy writing about a variety of topics, whether it’s about marketing, career topics, culture, and/or lifestyle. And I want this new newsletter to be a mix of things. The beauty of Substack is that it’ll allow me to categorize my topics, so that it’s easily accessible for my readers & subscribers. Thus, not having to scroll through all the different topics, to get to what you’re looking for.?

3- I’ll remove the (mental) limitations that I’ve placed on myself to just write about something that I think would only be suitable for a LinkedIn audience. Sometimes I want to write about marketing, but sometimes I might want to talk about a trip I took, the peace of mind it brought me, and what my itinerary consisted of y’know??

While it feels scary for me to start over from 0 considering how much I’ve grown this newsletter, I know that I’ll thank myself for it in the long run. I’ll still continue to repurpose my articles and post here on LinkedIn, but mainly when it’s about marketing.?

If you’re interested in both what I have to say about marketing and also my thoughts on several other topics like career journey, culture, lifestyle, then I invite you to join me here:?

My goal for this year is to be more consistent with my writing, and share so much more. Substack will also give me the ability to become more interactive, and use features like polls within my articles, to weigh in on the type of content you’d like to see too.?

I hope that you’ll join me. Thanks so much for your time, and even if only stay with me here on my LinkedIn newsletter - I’m thankful for you.?

Xoxo,?

Congrats on the move! I love the freedom over on Substack and look forward to reading your newsletter entries there. Sidenote: As a fellow Sag, your line about not being a 'niche girly' and being multi-faceted iss so LOUD for me! Feels good to be connecting with others with the same sentiments!!
