Thoughts From The Leadership Table: Leading Through Influence

Influence is indeed a crucial component of effective leadership. Although leaders can function without using influence and merely relying on formal authority, their leadership style may not be as effective in dealing with various complex challenges. Leading with an authority-focused approach may result in compliance, but it is unlikely to inspire enthusiastic followers. On the other hand, leading with influence is a more practical approach that can inspire and motivate the team. Influence tends to have a longer-lasting impact than rigid authority, and it is an invaluable tool for any leader. Hence, it's essential to recognize the importance of influence as a leadership tool.

Gone are the days when leaders depend on using authority and power to lead. Today’s complex environment and modern organizations demand leaders who can adapt to a more inclusive environment. One way for leaders to achieve success in such an environment is by leading with influence. By leading with influence, leaders become more adaptive and flexible. At the heart of this approach lies the importance of trust. Leaders who wish to influence effectively must first earn and then maintain trust with their team. This approach fosters collaboration and teamwork, and teams led by influential leaders are often more receptive to new ideas and innovations.

Leaders who lead with influence understand the power of persuasion know how to adapt to different situations. They prioritize collaboration, communication, and soft skills such as empathy, active listening, and effective communication. Personally, I believe in using influence as a vital part of my leadership approach to inspire and motivate others to achieve great results. As a leader, it is beneficial to not solely depend on authority but rather hone my approach as an influencer. If given a choice, I would prefer to follow a leader who embraces their role as an influencer rather than one who solely leads through their authority. It is important to be a leader who can influence others through actions, words, and empathy. As for me, I strive to be a leader who leads with influence, one who is approachable and collaborative, and encourages open communication. Leading with influence is not limited to a specific set of skills and is more of a journey that requires continuous learning and development.
