Thoughts about flexible work

Women need more #flexibility at work
I have talked with so many women #pharmacists who are seeking more flexible work arrangements so that they can successfully create a work-life set up that accommodates both professional and personal priorities. This is certainly one of the biggest challenges facing women in the workplace, yet most organizations are not prioritizing the conversation about how to support women in navigating these challenges.
When will leaders start to prioritize deliverables vs. 'time on site'?
When will leaders demonstrate how flexible work can be implemented in a way that doesn't compromise team dynamics?
Will leaders be role models for their teams by working flexibly themselves so that their direct reports to see them 'walking the walk'?
I am convinced that employees have so much untapped potential within their workforce that is being stifled by the constraints that traditional work environments have in place.
Let's change the narrative. Other genders are not immune to these issues; and individuals and families everywhere could benefit from organizations thinking differently about work. Though flexible work arrangements are not without their challenges, many reports cite that when given the option across industries, employees would choose #flexiblework every time. What can you do today to have discussions about changing work dynamics to support the individuals who are trying to contribute their best at work while still managing their life outside of work?

2 年I would love a more flexible work schedule. I’m a single mom (father deceased) with 2 middle schoolers. We have moved just so my kids can walk to & from school so that they can participate in activities at school. But getting them to & from outside activities is sometimes overwhelming & I’ve had to miss out on things because of work. I have some family help & ask parents to help with transportation but sometimes it doesn’t work.

2 年I completely agree! Kudos to the leadership team at University Hospitals specialty pharmacy for integrating some work from home days so I can see my children off to school those days!

2 年My brother is a clinical pharmacist with hospital and outpatient clinic pharmacy work experiences, while my sister-in-law is primarily a retail pharmacist. My nephew is in his fifth year of schooling toward a Pharm.D. degree, while his sister is a first year Nursing student and their younger brother is a Sophomore in high school. Flexible retail Pharmacy work environments have made it possible for my sister-in-law to work fewer hours back when their children were much younger, while as they have grown up and two headed off to college with the third entering into high school, thankfully her retail pharmacy employer has worked with her busy family life scheduling, so that now that they are older and becoming more independent, she can now return back to work with more of a full-time work schedule to help the family better cover college costs and educational experiences for their children. A way that life balance can return back to work balance more appropriately when time and circumstances permit things to transition back once again to "the way it was intended to be" - work and live as harmoniously as possible, while at the same time, ensuring that the family structure can still remain strong over the years.

2 年Each week our family has 30 drop-offs and pick-ups, and we only have three kids, which doesn't include anyone being sick or games and activities on weekends. I have a flexible job, so that I can do most of them, but the traditional nights and weekends of pharmacy life aren't for us. There are some jobs that are fundamentally incompatible with being a present parent and I'm not about to tell my kids I'm going to be a half-time parent and be part of their lives every other weekend because of work.
