Thoughts on Debbie Reynolds
I had no way of knowing how soon this would happen and make this even more relevant but I think it is worth repeating with a little bit more to say:
I never knew Debbie Reynolds was Carrie Fisher's mother. Both women touched my life growing up. One was being the kick ass grandmother from the Halloweentown movies (which was a pasttime for me to watch every year) but there was another role which I think impacted me more significantly from an even younger age.
When I was around 6 I watched Debbie Reynolds' portrayal of Charlotte from Charlotte's Web. Yes, I still cry when I hear this song and especially this scene. The film and by some extension, Debbie, helped me learn about what death really meant, the consequences of it not just for the person who dies but for everyone else who are left to go on living. It also helped me learn how wonderful and special it is to even be alive, to love and be loved, even if it means it has to end for us all one day. Even though it's hard to say goodbye, to let go, it is never really the end or gone as long as we remember what thoes who leave us have left behind.
I hope everyone who has died this year finds peace wherever they are now. For the rest of us still in the world of the living, we at least have each other, and if I have learned anything in my short time on Earth, it's that love and friendship are more valuable than gold.
I will miss Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, David Bowie, Prince, Gene Wilder, Alan Rickman, and everyone else who has passed that have meant so much to us growing up. I will mourn for the lives lost in the turmoil of war and genocide and hate crimes. I will pray that next year will bring something better and that we will all be kinder to each other.
Stay strong my lovelies and stay kind.
