Thoughts on COVID-19, the Manitoba Experience (Part 3)
This week was a week for understanding some of the current gaps for farmers and food processors in Canada, with a Manitoba view as well.
The temporary closure, or slow down of a variety of meat processing plants in Canada and the USA caught many people's attention. It is not a topic that many people think of these days, so I wrote Issue 12 of my Weekly Economic Digest on it. In the article I described Canada and Manitoba's cattle/beef and hog/pork market structure, some of the highlights of how it came to be, and touched on the issues due to COVID-19.
On May 5, 2020, the Federal government began unveil its further action to aid farmers being disrupted by COVID-19's effects on the livestock supply chain, horticulture, dairy and various other parts of Agribusiness. This was the topic of issue 13 on May 8, 2020 as well.
Like many other Canadian businesses, farmers and the agribusiness sector need some sense of financial surety in the face of COVID-19. Canadians also require domestic food security. These programs are aimed at mitigating both risks
Hopefully these two issues help people to better understand these important issues facing agribusiness. Resolving some of the uncertainty and disruptions due to COVID-19 will go a long way to helping ensure food security for consumers here and abroad.

4 年Derek Brewin: Professor Brewin, thank you for alerting me to the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics article by Professor James Rude on COVID-19 and the Canadian cattle/beef sector: Some preliminary analysis. I found it helpful, so I put a link in my Weekly Economic Digest, Issue 12 linking to it. You are a great help!
