A Thought On A Sunny Day In Dublin

A Thought On A Sunny Day In Dublin

As I take some time out this morning and sit down by the canal, I have been reflecting on some of the books that have inspired me over the years. My thoughts turn to that amazing book written many years ago by Susan Jeffers called " Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway ". When I have a wobble in my confidence or I need to step out of my comfort zone I find myself returning to this little book again and again. The wisdom and frankness expressed by the author is refreshing, so I thought I would summarize the main points of the book here ;

  1. Fear is a part of life: Fear is a natural human emotion, and it's normal to feel afraid at times. However, it's essential to recognize that fear does not have to control our lives.
  2. The fear will never go away: The fear will always be there, and waiting for it to go away before taking action is not the answer. We need to accept that fear is a part of life and learn how to manage it.
  3. Reframe fear: Instead of seeing fear as a negative emotion, we should reframe it as an opportunity for growth and change. Fear can be a sign that we are stepping out of our comfort zone and taking risks that can lead to positive outcomes.
  4. Take action: The only way to overcome fear is to take action. By facing our fears and taking small steps towards our goals, we can build our confidence and feel empowered.
  5. Trust in yourself: We need to believe in ourselves and our ability to handle whatever challenges come our way. We should focus on our strengths and past successes, rather than our weaknesses and failures.
  6. Practice positive affirmations: By using positive self-talk and affirmations, we can reprogram our minds to focus on the positive and build our confidence.
  7. Live in the present moment: We need to learn to live in the present moment and not let our fears about the future hold us back. By focusing on what we can control today, we can reduce our anxiety about the unknown.

Overall, the book suggests that fear is a natural part of life, but it doesn't have to control us. By reframing fear as an opportunity for growth, taking action, trusting in ourselves, practicing positive affirmations, and living in the present moment, we can overcome our fears and live a more fulfilling life.

I have recommended this book to many friends and clients, as this book has helped me enormously. It's well worth a read.

Interesting thought. And as they say...."all progress takes place outside the comfort zone". We need to get comfortable being uncomfortable in order to grow...

Good action focused framework for dealing with natural everyday fears Maurice . More deeply imbedded stresses , anxieties and trauma related fears need a more intensive measured approach- my experience but walking towards the issues is always a prerequisite for dealing with any fear - described recently as Future Events Appearing Real Thank you for sharing

Lovely article, Maurice. This book was one of Mom's favourites, and she would quote it constantly, to the point at which I felt like I'd read it myself!
