Are Olympic Medals Real Gold? Here’s Exactly What They’re Made of & How Much They’re Worth

If you’ve watched the Olympics, you may have wondered to yourself: Are?Olympic medals?real gold? And if they are, how much is an Olympic medal worth if an Olympian chose to sell theirs? We break down those answers ahead.

Though the?Olympic Games?started in ancient Greece, the first Olympic medal wasn’t given until the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where winners were given a silver medal and an olive branch. Runner-ups received a laurel branch and a bronze medal. The prizes were a nod to the Ancient Olympic Games, where winners received an olive branch from a wild olive tree in Olympia that was intertwined to form a circle.

Gold medals, however, weren’t given until the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, which started the three classes of medals we know today: gold for first place; silver for second place; and bronze for third place. Though the design of medals has varied since the 1896 Olympics, for the most part, the design selected for the 1928 Olympics remained for more than 70 years until it was redesigned at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The redesign was due to controversy around the use of the Roman Colosseum on the medals rather than a building with Greek roots. Each medal, however, must include the following details: the five rings symbol, the Greek goddess of victory Nike in front of the Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens, and the official name of the respective Games (such as Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020), according to the International Olympic Committee.

Along with medals, athletes who place between first and eighth also receive an Olympic diploma. All athletes who compete in the Olympics also receive a participation medal and diploma, which vary from year to year in design. At the main host city stadium, the names of all medal winners are also written on the walls. So that’s the history of medals at the Olympics in a nutshell. But are Olympic medals real gold? And how much are Olympic medals worth? Read on to find that answer.

Are Olympic medals real gold?

So…are Olympic gold medals real gold? Well, yes and no. Olympic gold medals have some gold in them, but they’re mostly made of silver. According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), gold and silver medals are required to be at least 92.5 percent silver. The gold in gold medals is in the plating in the outside and must consist of at least 6 grams of pure gold. As fans may have noticed, many gold medal winners will pose with their medal in their mouth on the winner’s podium, as if they’re about to take a bite out of it. While real gold dents, viewers won’t see much of a difference in Olympic gold medals as they’re made of mostly silver. “The medals for first and second places shall be of silver of at least 925-1000 grade; the medal for first place shall be gilded with at least 6g of pure gold,” An IOC spokesperson told?Newsweek?in 2021.

Silver medals, on the other hand, are made of pure silver, while bronze medals are 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc. The shape of medals is usually circular with an attachment for a chain or a ribbon. The minimum diameter is 60 millimeters, and the thickness is a minimum of 3 millimeters. Medals should weigh between 500 and 800 grams (17.64 to 28.22 ounces). Gold medals weighing about 556 grams in total, while silver medals weigh 550 grams and bronze medals weigh 450 grams.

For the?2020 Tokyo Olympics, the medals were also made of material recycled from electronic devices donated by the Japanese public. According to the official Olympics website, Junichi Kawanishi, director of the Japan Sign Design Association, designed the medals, which were made from small electronic devices, such as used mobile phones, collected from across Japan. Around 5,000 medals were produced for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which is the first to involve citizens in the production of medals and is the first to manufacture them using recycled and sustainable metals.

How much are Olympic medals worth?

So much are Olympic medals worth? Well, at a lot less than you may think. Gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo olympics are worth $820, according to CNBC, due to qthe inflated prices of metals like gold and silver. In 2010,?Luxist?reported that gold medals were worth around $494, while a silver medal was worth $260 at the time. A bronze medal was worth just $3 at the time, according to the site.

**** USA media claim that the United States are greatly winning the Olympics because the team has the most metals, but each metal is not equal in actual value. No one has ever tried to claim their company offers customers the “silver-standard.” A luxury experience is ever hyped as “bronze-plated.” The current price of an ounce of gold? $1,813. Silver? Try $25.43. Bronze is going for $2.55 for an entire pound. The Olympics include many of the best athletes in many sports of the World, and only the best 3 in each event are rewarded. I have not heard any testimony thanking God or stating commitment to Him. But what are the many different ways God the Father rewards His adopted children? His ways are so much better than the ways of the World!!!

Three specific Greek terms PSYCHE ( soul) the MIND , the Seat of the Emotions and the Drives. SOMA The Body ( For example the combination word PSYCHOSOMATIC means sickness that originates in the PSYCHE the MIND that affects the BODY ) The Pneuma SPIRIT the breath of life, the life force that animates both the PSYCHE and the SOMA . Some allow the SOMA to dominate making them fleshly others the SOMA making them emotional whereas the ideal is to allow the SPIRIT OF GOD to dominate all areas of existence. Of course even though we are PSYCHE SOMA AND PNEUMA we are still but ONE PERSON. The Psyche is also the source of the word HEART in the BIble so when the Word of God says THE HEART IS DEPERATELY WICKED WHO CAN KNOW IT that of course is not referring to the organ that pumps blood through our body but in reality our fallen PSYCHE or MIND.

Note: I have had the booklet “Theology and Science” (Volume 11 Number 1 February 2013) for a while, but never started reading it until I was waiting to see the doctor for a follow-up about blood test results and 2 ultra sound exams. After reading the first article “God’s Creation Through Evolution and the Language of Scripture”, I started to read the first part of an essay by Normand M. Laurendeau. It is almost too intellectual for me, but it explains why many think that dedicated Biblical Christian are crazy or mentally sick. God’s timing is perfect. I have been recently charged or declared the latter. Have you too? Jesus Christ said that people of the World or those who mostly just think secularly or humanistically will hate His disciples. It comes with the territory of being an adopted child of God.

Christians Mysticism

Mysticism, mystical experience, and mystical theology are phrases that capture the human desire to participate in the secret wisdom of God and to express readiness for more loving prayer with God. In the first comprehensive study of Christian mysticism in the twentieth century, Evelyn Underhill investigated those who directly experienced God because of their extraordinary intensity, self-discipline, and quest for truth. In her opinion, transfiguring of the will and subsequent union with God is available to all ordinary people-- in other words, we all have what she called a “capacity for God”. According to Drew Christiansen, for the paleontologist and mystic Teilhard de Chandin, the dedication needed to do science well is the same dedication required for spiritual growth. When the scientist pushes the research envelope, it is an ascetic path, and asceticism that begs for a steady movement toward the unknown. Indeed, “Teihard teaches us not only that the findings of science can add to our religious wonderment, but also that the scientific way of knowing can strengthen the mind’s ascent to God.”……

While mystical experiences can be spontaneous, they are mostly the result of following a mystical path steeped in prayer. This mystical journey can be outlined by considering five overlapping stages. The first three stages are pre- mystical, as they are based on human rather than divine work. The first stage is invocation, encompassing vocal prayer-- whether that prayer is memorized or spontaneous, said aloud or silently. The second stage is meditation, in which the practitioner recalls past sins and favors from God, considers moral reform and repentance, or envisions Biblical events. The latter is quite popular, typically involving the imagination of a scene or dramatic even from the life of Christ. The third state is recollection, in which the practitioner directs attention and receptiveness to God by eliminating as much as possible cognitive and affective interferences, thus transcending the limitations of the senses. Distractions, for example, can be avoided by establishing a quiet place for habitual prayer. Wandering thoughts can be controlled by such techniques as rhythmic breathing or the use of a sacred word so to militate against mental chatter. The idea is to spend quality time with God by quieting the mind.

The fourth and fifth states constitute mysticism per se, as they are based on divine rather than human work. The fourth state is contemplation, in which all meditation is blocked and recollection has sufficiently advanced to permit a passive rather than active receptivity to God. The shift from recollection to contemplation implies that sufficient mental space is now available to invite God into consciousness. As indicated previously, recollection is considered human work while contemplation is God’s work. Because of the important distinction, recollection is often called acquired contemplation, whereas contemplation itself is labeled infused contemplation. The fifth and final stage is unification, wherein contemplation leads to a strong feeling of imageless union with God. This union within consciousness is the height of the mystical path, and is only granted to the greatest mystics, those having exceptional relationships with God. The most significant aspect of mystical union is a congruence of wills between the mystic and God, which can progressively lead to longer and/or stronger experiences of transforming union.

Having described the five stages of the mystical journey, we may now define mystical experience as a contextually determined, trans-sensory metamorphosis of consciousness that usually supervenes only after an individual has achieved recollection. The experience is contextually determined, meaning it is nearly always related to the religious and cultural tradition of the mystic. A trans-sensory metamorphosis of consciousness occurs, meaning that the state of consciousness is transformed from sensory to beyond sensory. The key aspect of this definition is a clear connection between transformation of consciousness and recollection, so that acquired contemplation becomes a radical empowerment of thought and will in preparation for both infused contemplation and mystical union.

I beseech you therefore, brothers [and sisters], by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be you transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man [and woman] that is among you, not to think of himself [or herself] more highly than he [or she] ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man [and woman] the measure of faith.” [Romans 12:1-3]

Consecration of Jonathan Edwards

(Good Daily Challenge)

“I claim no right to myself-- no right to this understanding, this will, these affections that are in me. Neither do I have any right to this body or its members-- no right to this tongue, to these hands, feet, ears, or eyes. I have given myself clear away and not retained anything of my own. I have been to God this morning and told Him that I have given myself wholly to Him. I have given every power, so that for the future I claim no right to myself in any respect. I have expressively promised Him, for by His grace I will not fail.

“I take Him as my whole portion and felicity [great happiness], the joys of Heaven, prosperity; looking upon nothing else as any part of my happiness. His Law is the constant rule of my obedience. I will fight with all my might against the world, the flesh, and the devil to the end of my life. I will adhere [stick] to the faith of the Gospel, however hazardous [or dangerous] and difficult the profession and practice of it may be. I receive the blessed Holy Spirit as my Teacher, Sanctifier, and the only Comforter, and cherish all monitions [cautions or warnings] to enlighten, purify, confirm, comfort, and assist me. This I have done.

“I pray God, for the sake of others, to look upon me as a self dedication and receive me as His own. Henceforth I am not to act in any respect as my own. I shall act as my own if I ever make use of any of my powers to do anything that is not to the glory of God, or to fail to make the glorifying of Him my whole and entire business. If I murmur in the least at afflictions, if I am in any way uncharitable, if I revenge my own case, if I do anything purely to please myself or omit anything because it is a great denial, if I trust to myself if I take any praise for any good which Christ does by me, or if I am in any way proud, I shall act as my own and not God's. Therefore, I purpose to be absolutely His.” [Emphases and definitions purposely added.]

Appropriate Scriptures: Psalm 103, l Corinthians 15:22-31, and 2 Corinthians 4

And what if it is not Pre-Trib. Most of the rest of the World Christians believe in a Mid-Trib or Post Trib. Isn't great tribulation happening to Christians in Muslim and Communist dominated countries? Why should USA not face worse tribulation because of millions of aborted babies and homosexuality being promoted? And when has the majority been right in any country about something. Even in the USA Revolutionary war only a very small percentage were for the Declaration of Independence. And remember Hitler and many in Germany were for him. We should not argue about the theories of the future events. The catching up of the Church will happen after a loud trump sounding, so it will not be secret, and faith steadfastness and obedience to God's Word and the Holy Spirit are required of God's adopted children. His promises have helped us in past sufferings and will do such in the future. And God knows how much we can handle, (1 Corinthians 10:12-13.

But God changes not: past, present, future. He didn't destroy or stop the Ten Commandments or even the 1050 commandments in the New Testament, but the only way to please Him is obeying the urges of the Holy Spirit. See John 14-16, Romans 8, and Galatians 5.

****God is so much greater than the World of humanism. Most of the World’s Olympian athletes were trained when they were very young for one event or sport. Pressure was forced on them to focus on such only and do many many hours of daily working out to strengthen and build up their muscles. They were forbidden to do many things that 99% of the children are permitted to do. In the 2021 Olympics: “There are 206 nations, territories, and principalities, and 10,305 individual athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics. 13 nations have just two athletes in their team, while the largest team is the United States with 613. In the first Olympics there just 9 sports in 1896.” Now there 33 sports and 339 events. And each of the events there are just 3 awards to hang around ones neck and be displayed in their residence. Now think about the God of the Bible, inn how many ways does He reward His adopted children? How many times every day can He reward you? I mostly get daily rewarded with His wonderful Love, Truths, Wisdom, Guidance, Divine Peace, and Divine Joy via the Holy Spirit Who “says what He hears” mostly from Jesus Christ. Olympic metals can be sold for high prices or destroyed or stolen, but the Godly gifts are priceless. So why do we waste so much time doing secular thinking and humanistic doings?
