There are two types of people in the working world.
The first is the individual whose identity is based on his or her current job role and title.
When they are hired as a copywriter, or designer, or project manager, or accountant, they don’t identify with their role as much as they do where they work or who they work for. When they are promoted, their identity strengthens. And when they get fired, or choose to leave on their own accord, they begin their search of the next company or client that gives them their identity back.
Until then, they are simply “out of work.”
The second is the individual who self-defines his or her own identity.
They were a writer, or a designer before, during, and after they were hired anywhere. They “practice in public.” They own a small corner of the internet, live out their passion, showcase their skill set, and share their thoughts, insights, stories, and perspectives with the world.
When they take on a new job, or when they leave one opportunity behind for the next, nothing about their identity changes.
Thought leadership equity is transferrable.
When I was 26 years old, I built a company called Digital Press that helped CEOs, founders, executives at public companies, venture capitalists, and more, author thought leadership content online.
The #1 reason why these individuals wanted to share their insights and stories at scale?
To build equity in themselves that they could transfer and ladder up to their next opportunity. Because a founder or CEO whose identity is 100% related to their company/job loses that identity once the job is done.
But someone who is a thought leader in their industry can transfer that equity to the next opportunity, and so on.
