...Those who can't do, teach.

...Those who can't do, teach.

I've been following Ozan Varol for a while now as his blogs and writing resonate with me. Today his blog was about this old chestnut

"...Those who can't do, teach"

Sorry, Mr Shaw, I have to strongly disagree, this phrase has always pissed me off, when I hear it used I loose respect for the orator. I've always highly respected those who are willing to impart their valuable knowledge to the betterment of others, doing so with an altruistic motivation to advance their students.

Over the years I've found a love for teaching and sharing the knowledge I have with others. To the point where I chased it academically, choosing related subjects in my degree.

So now when I hear; "Those who can't do, teach" my come back is similar to:

If those who can don't teach, no-one will learn anything from their valuable experience, and their experience will die with them.
I see this as both selfish and sad, knowing we've lost valuable knowledge.

Teaching has been consistently one of the most respected professions since the caveman taught his mate how to start a fire. It's the desire/inspiration to teach that keeps knowledge and experience in our society, it's something we should celebrate more than we already do.

I will always value teaching both as a student and as a teacher. Thankfully the use of this statement -in my experience- is being used less and less, but it can't hurt to further celebrate those who teach.

So to all the teachers out there, regardless of whom you teach, know you are valued and you retain a position of great value in society. It may seem the contrary at times, but in the end, it's the value you add to your students that shows your immense value.

Thanks for sharing this article Corey, it really resonated, the saying irritates me also. I’ve found a love for teaching and realise I’ve always done it in my consulting work. When I’ve told people that I do both, they ask me if I’m worried about losing business by teaching others - perhaps those who don’t teach have poor time or poor abundance mindset?
