“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”*– but you’re lucky, OTT has a Time Machine!

Right now, in every part of the world that a) watches TV and b) has Internet connectivity, there is a consumer driven revolution going on - the revolution of consumers watching what they want, when they want, and where they want it.  The public has spoken and every content and service provider in the world has to ride the wave or drown beneath it.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a Revolution as

'A forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favour of a new system’

Thankfully violence isn’t a key component but whilst the establishment will resist, there are countless cases of plucky newcomers armed with the right idea, willing to do something different to change the world.

The smart ones amongst the establishment eventually embrace the changes and throw their considerable talents and experience into the mix to attain huge success.

However, before this happens there is a history in pretty much any field where attempts take place to protect the status quo, to avoid cannibalism, and/or to outright attack the new order by any means necessary.

I’ve now tracked the launch and evolution of OTT across the world and can see the same pattern emerging time and time again.    There are huge opportunities to attain and, in such, success in OTT can be defined as a simple equation:

Success = Quality of Content x Quality of Experience

Too many services rush to get as much content as they can, on a wide range of platforms in the shortest time possible.  They mimic successful services from other territories but fail to truly understand what made them great.  The most successful services understand the equation and, in many cases, have gone through a pain barrier to get there.

The good news is that going through that pain barrier is no longer needed.

Conviva has been helping top tier media companies like HBO, ESPN, Sony and many more achieve success in the OTT world since 2006.  During this time, Conviva has built a massive infrastructure of knowledge surrounding the viewer experience and how to improve, maintain and ensure it’s always to a customer’s satisfaction.

And this is the Time Machine of the title.   Conviva’s Intelligent Control Platform with its unrivalled big data analytics, real-time monitoring technology and pre-emptive optimization engine, ensures publishers, broadcasters and operators can avoid the mistakes of OTT history and focus on what is most important – happy customers and all the benefits that come from that.
