The conference at the HDI TH!NX IIoT Campus brought together leading minds from the energy sector to tackle one of the industry's most pressing challenges: the safety and insurability of battery energy storage systems (BESS). With growing demand for reliable energy solutions, especially amid the ongoing energy transition, BESScon shed light on crucial developments that are shaping the future in both industrial and residential contexts. Among the key topics were strategies for extending battery life through effective management practices. Attendees explored how optimal storage conditions can significantly reduce degradation and improve efficiency, and highlighted the importance of proactive maintenance in extending the usability of battery systems (Speaker:?Jonas van Ouwerkerk). The conference also highlighted the importance of predictive analytics and big data in the BESS sector. By adopting these technologies, companies can monitor battery performance in real time, leading to improved system stability and reduced risk. 2 - TraWeBa: Shaping the Future of Battery Logistics and Predictive Analytics
This summer, leaders from the battery and automotive industries gathered at our HDI TH!NX IIoT Campus for an inspiring networking event focused on two pivotal topics: safe battery logistics and predictive analytics - key drivers of tomorrow's mobility and energy storage solutions.
The event showcased breakthroughs in battery manufacturing and highlighted how predictive analytics can revolutionise battery systems by identifying and mitigating risks early, thus optimising safety and extending battery lifecycles (Speaker:?Dr. Kai-Philipp Kairies). As the demand for electric vehicles increases, the safe transportation of batteries and vehicles is more essential than ever. 6 - TH!NXPedia: What is Thermal Runaway?
Thermal runaway is a critical safety issue in lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries, occurring when increased temperature triggers a self-reinforcing cycle of heating that can lead to battery failure, fire, or explosion. This process unfolds in three phases: initially, there is slow self-discharge that produces low heat levels, often unnoticed. This is followed by rapid self-discharge, which dramatically increases heat generation, making it increasingly difficult to control. Finally, complete self-discharge results in extreme, uncontrollable heating that can lead to catastrophic fires.
Key factors contributing to thermal runaway include high ambient temperatures, flammable materials, and internal short circuits, often caused by mechanical stress. To mitigate these risks, it's essential to implement robust monitoring strategies and safety measures, such as advanced temperature sensors and effective heat dissipation systems. By understanding thermal runaway and proactively addressing it, you can enhance the safety and reliability of battery storage systems, ultimately protecting your investment and ensuring peace of mind.
