Thirteenth International Conference on Fundamentals and Industrial Applications of HIPIMS 2023

This year was the 13th International Conference on HIPIMS – organised by teams from Sheffield Hallam University’s National HIPIMS Technology Centre, Hauzer TechnoCoating in The Netherlands and The Fraunhofer Institute IST in Braunschweig, Germany.?

The conference is a premier event for the HIPIMS community to exchange ideas, advance research and develop new technology aspiring to:

  • Promote High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) as a novel technology for surface modification and coating deposition
  • Provide a scientific forum to discuss the fundamentals of plasma science and thin film growth and exchange ideas about new industrial applications of HIPIMS
  • Bring together the surface engineering communities for plasma coating, plasma surface treatments and non-plasma advanced surface engineering
  • Connect the academic research community with the industrial world to foster progress of plasma-based technologies.

More than 160 participants from all over the world came together for this year’s conference, which was held in Venlo, to align with the 40th anniversary of long-standing strategic industry partner Hauzer.

As well as scientific talks and a well-attended poster session there was also a significant industry exhibition, short CPD courses and an energetic panel session chaired by David Elliot the CEO of Surface Engineering Association on the topic of Surface Engineering for Hydrogen Economy. The strong education offering of the conference has recently been recognised with CPD accreditation by IoM3.
