Third Thursday - March 21
Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? Throughout March, our branches have been offering a number of nutrition workshops that are free and open to the public. Hopefully, you have had a chance to attend at least one.
Here at the YMCA, nutrition is foundational to our mission. A lot of folks, when they think of the Y, think of the "gym and swim" side to what we offer. Honestly, that's great! We want everyone to feel welcomed into our facilities to participate in whatever exercise and movement activities help them feel like their best selves. However, the YMCA is so much more than a great place to exercise, and these Nutrition workshops are just one example of how we take a person-centered approach to wellness in our communities.?
A person cannot be their best self if they are struggling to eat a balanced diet. That's why we offer nutrition education. They also cannot be their best self if they are struggling to get enough food - that's why we do so much work in the community to fight food insecurity.
Food insecurity continues to grow as the cost of living rises. Our hunger relief efforts support various food pantries and organizations like Albany’s South End Cafe, Schoharie Food Pantry, Schenectady’s Cornell Cooperative Extension, Guilderland Food Pantry, St. Madeleine Sophie Church, Altamont Food Pantry, Voorheesville-New Scotland Food Pantry, Unity House, and Oakwood Community Center Food Pantries in the Capital District. Additionally, our childcare programs offer nutritious snacks and meals to the more than 1500 of children in our care. Not to mention, our extremely popular Basket Brigade program which attracts many volunteers and donors each year around the holiday season.
Bringing it back to our Nutrition Classes, we still have two more on the calendar for this month if you'd like to join us:
And finally, if you haven't already, please consider joining us on March 27 for our annual President's Awards celebration where we will honor some of our most treasured volunteers and supporters. If you are thinking about becoming more involved with the YMCA's mission, this is a great opportunity to learn about some of the life-changing experiences that can be found at the Y. Trust me, watching some of our volunteer story videos, there isn't a dry eye in the house. Plus, your ticket purchase will go toward supporting any number of the programs I just listed above.
