“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” – Coretta Scott King

Hello Capital District community leaders,

This quote has been sitting with me as I reflect on our President’s Award celebration last month (photos below), which was held at Brown’s Revolution Hall in Troy. If you didn’t have an opportunity to attend, I can share that it was a night that truly embodied community. As loved ones, acquaintances, colleagues, and supporters gathered, the room was loud with laughter and conversation. Everywhere you turned, folks were shaking hands, embracing, catching up, taking pictures together. Looking around, I felt so grateful to be here after years of pandemic-related distancing.

However, it wasn’t just the atmosphere that made me feel this way – it was central purpose of the event: to honor and thank some remarkable people who have made a huge impact on the Capital District YMCA community over the last year.

Take our friend Congressman Paul Tonko, for example. As our Lifetime Achievement honoree, he has been a powerful YMCA supporter and ally for years. We announced at the President’s Awards that, through the Congressman’s leadership and with the advocacy and support of Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, the Capital District YMCA was able to secure $1 million in federal funding to support the renovations and expansion currently underway at our Southern Saratoga location. This funding will allow us to enhance and reimagine our community and youth-focused spaces to ensure individuals of all ages have access to fun, safe, educational, and health-promoting programming.

Consider, too, another honoree: our friend Cedric Carter, who was instrumental in helping the Capital District YMCA navigate the pandemic. He has not only left an indelible mark on the Y’s history, but his hours spent coaching and mentoring our Black and Latino Achievers youth has left a powerful impression on them as well.

A community is defined by the actions of its members, and this year’s President’s Awards celebration reminded me of just how great our community can be, and just how central the YMCA is to that community.

A huge round of thanks again to our amazing President's Award recipients:

  • Lifetime Achievement: Congressman Paul Tonko
  • Corporation of the Year: Graypoint, LLC
  • Volunteer of the Year: Cedric Carter, TD Bank
  • Albany: Mark Bobb-Semple, Global Albany
  • Bethlehem: Chris Dempf, Tobin & Dempf LLP
  • Chingachgook: Jerry Chao, Chao Plastic Surgery
  • Glenville: Heather Manthey, Community Volunteer
  • Greenbush: Jeff Marx, CT Male Associates
  • Greene County: Ann Hughes, University at Albany
  • Guilderland: Sandy Clark, Gary Gnirrep, Amy Salamone, Community Volunteers
  • Schenectady: Chief Eric Clifford, City of Schenectady

Lally Learning Center Brings Outer Space to Life

Did you catch this year's solar eclipse? Our little ones at Lally Early Learning Center didn't want to miss out on this cosmic event, so our teachers got creative. They built an inflatable space lab, thanks to the brilliant Ms. Lori, to immerse the kids in the wonders of space. Who knows, maybe one day they'll be the ones exploring the stars!

Does this look like fun? We still have summer camp openings available!
