Why don't first pancakes merit celebration?

One of my client Tim Hogan says he eats the first pancake and serves the good looking ones to his kids.

My first pancakes look like sad doll parts.?

But I never toss the batter.

The batter is what's used to get to the third pancake.

This pancake and the fourth and fifth are perfect and puffy with a golden sheen bathing in a syrupy wading pool, ready for Martha Stewart -- her gingham napkin on her lap. Oh please.

I'm not a fan of pancakes but no matter, the metaphor is why you're here.

This is the lesson we all, especially #jobseekers or #careerprofessionals need to hear and remember:

Avoid the mistake of trying to serve the third pancake first.

Grant yourself permission to remove the self scrutiny or fabricated omen that you suck at (fill in the blank).

The fill ins I hear the most include "I suck at networking. I can't write content. I don't have anything to say or I am terrible at interviewing"

You don't suck at __________.

You're new to it.

Answer me this: When was the last time you were behind the breakfast grill at a high volume brunch spot?

Can you, will you, replace the lie that it has to look good to be good? This is important because no matter what you do, or where you are there's always a first pancake.

Or as one of my mentors says "at every level there's a new devil". Ain't that the truth.

If you're back in the #jobmarket don't let your first cold outreach attempt and inevitable ghosting stop you from continuing.

If your early posts aren't getting engagement, all good. Go back to the batter and practice your flips by commenting.

If you're challenged with building your network or believe you don't have one, start small and make some silver dollars reachout with those you loved working with in the past.

The Most Important Ingredient In Your Process Is Courage.

Make the first pancake and know full well that it won't be perfect and move on from there.

And don't stop. Make lots of first pancakes with humility and ego on the side.
