Another taste of something different again this month! ?Each illustrator has certain images in their portfolio which carry particular significance for them and we have been on a mission to discover a little more about what these images mean to them - in their own words. ? Today we peek behind the creative curtain with Joe Morse, Kuri Huang, Grace Park and Meilo So.
As ever, ?you can see more of their work on our website, social media or Behance pages.
"One of my favourite portraits was done in 2002 for a Rolling Stone magazine review of the Spike Lee film, 25th Hour. It was a spot illustration, but I took the opportunity to do a portrait that added visual cues to Lee’s films and New York City. The film takes place days after 9/11 and my own love of the city made this image very poignant to me.
Also, Spike Lee contacted me and purchased the original art, so that is the highest praise when the subject of a portrait is thrilled. My conversation with him centred on his incredulity that a Toronto artist could have captured so much of his work and NYC. I suggested that the front row seat that Canadians have to US culture offers us a unique perspective.
My daughter just spent a year living in Brooklyn and I made frequent trips to visit and renewed my love of NYC and the raucous energy of its boroughs and neighbourhoods."
Kuri says, ''I love this one, I felt very relaxed and joyful when I drew this picture. Although this is a commercial, the client gave me a lot of freedom to express what I wanted to express without any constraints.I like the rich and weird colors of this picture, I also like the contrast between the neat straight and curved lines in this image and the twisted, ghostly entanglements in the background.''
"This illustration for Allure Korea’s Beauty Festival in Tokyo reimagines?chaekgado, a traditional Korean still-life painting, by blending classic motifs with K-beauty products. Modern beauty items are placed within traditional shelves, celebrating Korea’s cultural heritage and its influence on contemporary beauty. The piece bridges past and present, showcasing a unique Korean beauty narrative. ''
"As Christmas is approaching the thought of peace and goodwill is constantly in my mind. This image appeared in Lance Lee’s children/adult story entitled 'The Tale of the Animals' Christmas in Crouch End'. This was my first attempt to depict a set of animals as human-like characters rather than in their naturalistic form.''
