ThinkNBCnews.com Forgot to "think" About Derek Jeter's Contributions
I know a little about baseball and statistics. I don't think Corbin Smith knows baseball or statistics. The concept of baseball and statistics might be new to NBC also that is why they published such a piece of junk article.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award goes to the player who contributed most to the success of their team, not necessarily the most talented player in the game in each of the leagues. The fact that Derek Jeter did not win an MVP is really not that surprising considering he was on a team with some great position and utility players. This MVP thing being a big deal is just garbage.
They talked about all the singles Derek Jeter hit as if it was an encumbrance to the Yankees.
Newsflash: A runner has to get on base to score a run, and well, runs win games. Derek Jeter finished his career in sixth place for hits and eleventh place for runs scored. Apparently he scored some runs after hitting a lot of singles.
From an analytical standpoint if you take a players runs scored and runs batted in and subtract home runs (because a player gets an RBI and run) this figure indicates the productivity a player provides for his team.
Jeter had 1923 runs scored and 1311 RBIs and 260 home runs for a net of 2974 runs produced. This indicates that Derek Jeter produced a lot of runs for the New York Yankees and was a leader in major league baseball. Most players, including current Hall of Fame members do not even come close. Save me the theatrics that Jeter was no Ruth, Gehrig, Mays, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, or Stan Musial. Who the hell was in their league?
You need pitching to win, no doubt about it, but scoring runs and driving in runs is pretty important also.
If you want to vomit I have attached the article, click on the link after getting a garbage bag in place.
