Thinking About Your Thinking

Thinking About Your Thinking

How often do you think about what you think about?

Well, I do...a LOT. This is a good thing.

Thinking about what you are thinking about is called metacognition, and it is one of the top higher-order thinking skills that you need to execute in life.

Thinking about your thinking leads to higher personal development, reflection, emotional maturity, and change in your relationship with yourself and with others.

What is one simple step to grow in thinking about your thinking?

  1. Take 5 minutes and write down what you are thinking about. Can you turn off the script? Or, does the thinking continue?
  2. Is your thinking positive or negative? Be present and do your best not to judge your thoughts and observe what it is you think about.
  3. Next, identify if your thoughts keep to one topic or jump across different topics.

If you want to expand your sustained thinking, set a timer for a short amount of time (1-2 minutes) and be intentional to think about that one topic. Sometimes, playing instrumental music in the background will help your brain relax and continue to focus.

Continue to do this throughout the week and add an extra minute each day. Reflect on your thoughts. Did the thoughts change from more negative to positive?

Let me know how it goes if you do this.
