Thinking Things and Smart Cities

Building Trust in AI

With Artificial Intelligence continuing to grab the headlines, (see the recent US Presidential Executive Order) we thought it would be helpful to share some of Atsign’s thoughts on the future of AI.?

Co-founder and CTO, Colin Constable, recently gave a talk at ONUG, painting a picture of how we are at a crossroads, and how desperately we need a Networking 2.0 approach.?

“We need to be able to network AIs…and we need another layer of abstraction.?

The other way of doing it…some megacorporation…can see everything we do, they can monitor everything we do, and they can start influencing us even more than they are influencing us right now.”

CEO and Co-founder, Barbara Tallent, offered a thoughtful piece on trust and AI, emphasizing the importance of decentralization and polymorphism in building a trustworthy AI ecosystem.

Smart Cities and Networking 2.0

There is a similar thread running through Atsign’s approach to building safe smart city ecosystems. Networking 2.0 provides a decentralized, privacy-preserving, and interoperable framework that allows all the systems and things in smart cities to communicate and collaborate effectively, and it does so while safeguarding sensitive data and ensuring fair access for all.

We’ve been busy attending events all over the world lately (from Amsterdam to Tokyo) to talk with people about all the ways that Atsign’s Networking 2.0 technology improves smart cities. So far, we’ve focused on the gateways, often LoRaWAN gateways, that are collecting information in city and rural environments. As Colin pointed out in his ONUG presentation, if a solution can be diagrammed out, Networking 2.0 can make it happen!?

Having attended all of these events, it is very clear to us that while countries and their leaders have great vision to make their cities smart, there is a lot left to be desired in making them equally digitally safe and secure. The recently concluded Smart City Expo World Congress was a great example? - several European countries are funding programs to digitize agriculture, water management systems, power plants, and more. But security and resilience were noticeably missing from these proposed solutions. This is a great opportunity for Atsign’s technology. SSH No Ports is a simple and affordable, yet powerful tool for making sure security and resilience are built into all smart city solutions. We’re excited to be working with partners across the globe to start implementing Networking 2.0 solutions in their cities.?

Networking 2.0 is the key to unlocking the best version of the future, where AI and smart city solutions are designed with inherent security and privacy. Let’s leave the sci-fi dystopian scenarios right where they belong–in movie theaters and on bookshelves!
