Thinking of our sisters in conflict zones on International Women’s Day

Many parts of the world are experiencing armed conflicts and other threats to peace and security.

Women and children bear a heavy burden in conflict situations. This translates not only to direct physical trauma but also psychological and social distress. Armed conflicts threaten and destroy the fundamental essence of family security; and ultimately put deep scars on future generations.

Yet, women also provide a deep reservoir of support for defensive efforts to free their homelands of unwanted aggressors. This support is often under recognized.

Finally and most importantly, women can be, and should be, key voices in peace building efforts. Arguably, they have the most at stake, and in many cases, provide untapped capacity to break the ongoing cycle of violence through creative solutions that can bring peace to communities.

Let’s make 2023 a year of progress in bringing women’s voices to the table at times of conflict. The future peace and security of our planet depends on it.
