.???? I accessed and reviewed the mission, programs, finance, and list of board members.
.???? I confirmed that the organization has both a conflict of interest policy and Directors and Officers Liability Insurance (D&O).
.???? I assessed the organization has no history of breaking laws/scandals.
.???? I assessed the organization's commitment to DEI and belonging.

Serving on a board is a benefit to your career, and how you serve becomes part of your reputation. Why do it? With the right cause and the right team, you will have fun while doing the right thing. At the same time, you will develop your leadership skills and your portfolio of situations in which you have demonstrated leadership. When your job limits your growth or has little opportunity for you to invest your passion, volunteer board work could be the opportunity you seek. Just assess your readiness before you say yes!
