It only takes a few milliseconds to draw conclusions about a person based on his or her profile photo. And, there is no doubts: having a profile picture is a must on LinkedIn.
Did you know that adding one which stands out for all the right reasons actually makes it 7 times more likely for your profile to be clicked on and 14 times more likely to be viewed on the platform?
So, if you don’t have one yet, make it your priority to include a photo that will help put you in front of the eyes of recruiters (along with your skills and qualifications, of course). Here are some tips to nail your LinkedIn profile picture.
1. Appropriate Attire
If you are actively searching for a job, it is best to prefer more formal attire (the type of clothing you would wear for an interview). Anything that makes you feel comfortable and confident in it will do. The goal is to appear approachable; yet, professional.
Studies have shown that women are best perceived in shirts with collars and jewel tones while a dark-coloured jacket over a light-coloured shirt is an excellent option for men (compared to those that wear trendier clothes). This means that a shirt in lavender, light grey or light blue can work well against a dark blue or purple tie for the gents. In general, take your audience into account and think about what you are trying to convey with your outfits.
2. Mind the Background
A dark or black background calls for vibrant or light colours. As for pure white, it should best be avoided because it draws all attention to it unless it is paired with a jacket or blazer of a darker shade like navy, blue, or grey. Remember that the focus should be on your face.
3. Consider the Light
Taking your picture near a source of natural light like a window will deliver exceptional results. In any other case, the light source should best be set up to the immediate right or left of the photographer for a flattering photo. This is because using a flash will most likely wash your face out.
Note: Try different angles to see how light plays with your face. Also, consider having the photographer position the camera slightly above you to avoid that terrible double chin.
Extra Tips:
· Avoid big patterns because they, too, turn all eyes on them (and away from your face).
· Wear a collared shirt or a blouse (for women) under the jacket or blazer. For a sharper look ladies may skip the shirt, though, provided that the jacket is buttoned high enough.
· Dresses are great options for the ladies, especially when matched with a complementing jacket.
· Women can add a splash of colour with the right accessory (i.e. scarves) or jewellery (i.e. earrings and necklace). If you choose to wear a neck piece, ensure it stays above the sternum to make sure it will show in the final shot.
· For men: opting for small patterns in both the tie and shirt will help make you look more put together.
· Asking a professional photographer shooting your profile photo, instead of taking a selfie, is a much more preferred option for a clean, professional and more credible look.
Undeniably, taking the time to get a convincing picture for your LinkedIn profile might just be the very first thing to start with to boost your chances of getting noticed by the right people. So, focus on perfecting your image, together with optimising your employment history, summary or experience. It will surely pay you off in the long run.
