Thinking of getting back in?

In order to add positive impact to the industry, I wanted to share my opinion on one of the main topic’s that I get asked about on a regular basis in case it can help anyone that is in the same situation.
As we know in the Drilling industry in the last 4-5 years, we have all suffered one way or another and with the most impacted as is normally is the case is the personnel doing the work out on the units offshore.
The perception rightly or wrongly and I have been on both sides of this is that Drilling Companies and as an extension Recruitment Companies treat people very badly these days and they are certainly bad elements in this industry who do exactly that which is the precisely the reason Ogenus Offshore was formed to created more of a positive impact to these personnel and the industry in general.
The point is that there is some people who wouldn’t want to come back to the offshore industry and can understand that but with the perception that the industry is improving slowly and it certainly is slowly improving although recent oil prices are disturbing so I am getting asked the question on a regular basis “if it is worth getting back in or is the industry still in a bad way”.
My answer is always the same, the longer you are out of the industry the longer it is to get back in and especially to operations and on a daily basis the customers we deal with and this decision is made by supervisors on rigs is that this certain person has been out of operations too long so either it is a no or to need to come back in a lower position.
Some people have the attitude that “I was a Toolpusher in 2004 so why should I come back as an AD or a Driller”,
This isn’t going to help you trust me on that as people know you don’t forget what you have learned over 20, 30 years but after 5 years out for example can you honestly admit you won’t be a little rusty.
You also have to consider the guys you will be joining on the rig won’t be wanting someone that they will have to babysit or worry about as all are overworked and tired without that added issue and as always in a highly competitive job market, you have to consider the other guy who maybe who has working over the last few years in operations – who would you choose if you were making the decisions?
So if you are ready to come back then one of the next big topics I am asked about is training, such as “why should I pay for training such as Well Control, as companies always paid it for me”, this isn’t the reality in 2020 and to play the game you have to accept the rules and think about the medium/long term benefits.
People also ask should they delay getting FOET or Medical until they get a job offer and I totally get its an expensive gamble if without working it is a lot of money without any guarantees but in order to have any chance you need to take this step as I have had guys who would have been on jobs but didn’t have valid FOET or in once case a valid passport!
All this is just my opinion which is based on daily conversations with Drilling contractors hiring managers and HR Managers!
If looking to get back into the offshore drilling world, then please send CV to https://www.ogenusoffshore.com/careers/ and we will be in touch!

4 年I think if you want to go back offshore returning in a lower position is the way to go. You'll be up to speed quite quickly, your supervisor will appreciate the experience you bring and the way the industry works it probably won't be too long before you're offered a promotion (if that's what you want). My two pence.....
