Thinking Frog Corner: Effective Communication Across Cultures

Thinking Frog Corner: Effective Communication Across Cultures

Working in recruiting, we come across with professionals, literally from all over the World. Coming from outside of the US myself, I recognize how every person loses direct words' meanings when speaking English as his/her second language. Here are some tips that I found to be useful in diminishing the gap of potential misunderstandings:

1.???? Understanding cultural differences

One of the important aspects of international recruiting is understanding the cultural differences between countries and taking these differences into account in the communication process. Each culture has its own nuances that can affect the communication process and the perception of the candidate. Showing respect for the candidate's cultural background and views will help you communicate more effectively.?

2.???? Language barriers

Be sure to consider language barriers when communicating with candidates from different countries. Even if candidates speak English, proficiency levels can vary greatly. Make sure that the information is clearly and understandably formulated.

3.???? Know your audience

Before you reach out to international candidates, do some research on their background, culture, and expectations. This can help you avoid misunderstandings, stereotypes, and offensive remarks. For example, you should know how to address candidates properly, whether they prefer formal or informal communication, and what topics to avoid or emphasize.

4.???? Seek feedback.

Encourage candidates to provide feedback about the communication process so they feel heard and understood.

5.???? Listen actively

Active listening is essential for effective communication with international candidates. It means that you pay attention to what your candidates say, how they say it, and what they mean. You should also show interest, empathy, and curiosity, and ask open-ended questions to clarify or explore their perspectives. You should also avoid interrupting, judging, or arguing with your candidates, and give them enough time and space to express themselves. You should also provide feedback, summarize, and confirm your understanding.

By approaching interactions with international candidates with respect, empathy, you can create a positive experience for all applicants.
