Think your English is preventing you from getting a job? Read on...

It's not you! Sorry, I just had to jump in and get that off my chest ASAP.

In my role as an English Coach, I've seen a HUGE increase in the number of people reaching out to me for English lessons, with a focus on interview prep. Their reason usually stems from the fact that they have deduced, after numerous failed interviews, that it must be them.

I have learned it's not. I can tell in less than 5 minutes whether English is a GENUINE barrier for someone, in any circumstance.

I am not only a qualified English teacher, but an experienced and somewhat weathered Head of Talent. International Talent to be more specific. So I stand by my above statement of 5 minutes or less to assess an individual's English level.

So what is the reason?

Sorry to say it, but the economy is a little spun out at the moment. It's going to get a little worse before it gets better so batten down the hatches folks! This means good news for those of you who think it's your English preventing you from getting a job offer. I know, sounds like BS but it's true. Take a sense of comfort in the fact you're not the problem. The economy is. Companies not hiring are the problem.

While there are fewer jobs and more candidates, those of you whose first language is not English, allow yourself a little breather and realize that even though it's going to be difficult to get a job, it won't be down to how you speak!

So, what can you do about it?

Relax and be pragmatic. The economy is shaky, companies aren't hiring so work smart, not hard.

1. Continue to apply for jobs
2. Up-skill - on the cheap!
3. Assess your English, take lessons if you need to
4. Save your money
