Do you know what motivates the people on your team?
If you need things from them. You should.
If you manage them. You better.
How often have we worked with people and we don't even know why they get up in the morning? It happens all the time. We assume we know what they want. We assume they want more money, or a promotion. Well, everyone is different.
Some people work weekends just for extra recognition. Some people want to do just enough to satisfy requirements so they can be with their family. Some want to be CEO. Some want less stress. We can't assume that we know what they want.
The best way to find out what motivates people is to ask them.
Think about all of the managers you've had throughout your life. All the teachers. Even your parents. How many of them have asked you, “What motivates you?”
It's such a rare question, that many people don't even know how to answer it. You might need to give them some time to think about it. You might give them some examples. You might tell them what motivates you.
But eventually, it's a good idea to find out what motivates people. Because when you do you, know how to communicate with them. Then you know how to get things done with them. Then you know how to make them happy.
Until we know what motivates people, we are simply guessing. Give it a try. Ask them today.
