Social media changes the game. For the first time in recent history, regular every-day folks can create and test commercial messages targeted directly at a select audience. They can do this work in social spaces for free.

On Linkedin, you can build an audience of motivated professionals.

On Twitter, you can build an audience of new media, media professionals, and more teens, twenty-somethings, and thirty-somethings than you can count.

On Facebook, you can build audiences around your network of friends from your community, your schools, or any number of interest groups.

What's different about today's online business opportunity is that you can test and target your own messaging themes. Get a twitter account and try it out. Start posting on LinkedIn. Create a Facebook account for your business. Find out when people are online. Find out the themes to which they respond this week. Learn that your customers really do want a say in how you do business with them. Listen up!

It's not raw just numbers of traffic that you should care about. The web is a lab, an online place to experiment about marketing and messaging. Which engagement themes matter to your audience? How do they want to be engaged or messaged? Ask, listen, and learn about your customers online. With a little elbow grease (that's the hard work part, right?) you can grow your business in amazing new ways online.

You can experiment a little more every day. You can experiment every hour if you so choose. You can experiment every minute and find out exactly what's going on throughout the day.

But here's the key. You've got to be measuring and listening with an ear to let the data and messages inform your business decisions. If you measure and experiment systematically, (a.k.a... if you engage the scientific method) you can learn exactly which messages create buzz. What are your customers responding to today, this week, or this year? Social media is a wonderful laboratory to cultivate a better understand of the messages, products, and insights that will grow your business.

If you don't want to leverage the insights from #social media, you don't have to. Your competitors will be glad to take your business away. Your competitor resellers will be happy to scoop up the searches for your best products and re-sell your products for you. Your web savvy opponents don't want you to engage better strategy on-line. They would love to keep the business for themselves.

Why bother with better messages and analytics online? One doctor's office I worked with lost 40% of his business to a competitor with a strategy on Facebook. It was about $5 Million dollars a year that his team lost. One enterprise team I was engaged to help grow business could not coordinate and leverage search and social effectively. They were losing $500 Million in new revenue opportunities every year to competitor re-sellers and competitors who were better at engaging social tools. Oddly, they have never learned the basic organization principles for effective web teams. They have dozens of marketers, but collectively they do not know how to leverage the power of search and social to grow millions in revenue. Their bosses aren't even asking.

One business I empowered with better search, social, and web activities could not figure out their web listening strategy. Instead of listening, they left search, tweets, product pages, and other site activity to be managed in a disjointed way. There were so many voices competing and hurting their online growth. Across lots of different business silos there was no clear messaging or listening directive. So what happens if you don't measure, test, and listen to customers before you launch a new product? This team tanked revenue 70% in one of their biggest markets. Until I showed them the data, they didn't even realize the impact of not examining their web strategy.
