THINK WELL

THINK WELL

by Stephen Hudak

It is 2021. The news is filled with terms such as “crazy year,” “new normal,” “social distancing,” - all designed to separate us from one another. Marcus Aurelius said: “You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Outside events shout at us constantly. So loudly we can scarcely hear ourselves think. We miss the chirping cardinal, fail to see his bright red against the newly fallen snow. We don’t see the smile in our loved ones, the sadness in our child’s eyes at our lack of attention.

“You have power over your mind – not outside events.” We are affected by surrounding events but have a choice in how we react to them. We are human, frail creatures, we will feel the world’s pain and, no doubt, must absorb some of it ourselves. That’s part of preparing, acting to protect ourselves and our families – the fight part of “fight or flight.” But our thoughts are truly ours. The is likely little we can do about outside influences, but we must be in a growth mindset to adapt as necessary, be flexible, change when necessary

When we dwell on elections, viruses, mistakes – it is often unhealthy. Note I said “dwell.” Think about them, plan, learn, do what we can, and come to peace with the rest - move on. Dwelling seldom does any good.

Take a few minutes to consider all the good that came from this past year. New career? New birth? Wisdom? The painters of this past year use dark grays, browns, and too much black. Yes, it was difficult, no doubt. What are we going to do about it? What can we do about it?

Take some time this new year to take care of YOU! Without a good YOU, the world is less. Your family is less. Do something positive every morning to start your day. Pray. Read positive words. Listen to encouraging messages. And breathe. Most importantly, don’t forget to breathe. Be aware of your body and mind. Notice how often in tense situations you forget to breathe properly. You hold your breath, you sigh deeply. Slow and steady.

Think well.
