Think Waterless: How Waterless Urinals Can Make It Easier to Clean

Here's what's happening. Most of the U.S. has hard water. Hard water differs from regular water in that it contains many more minerals.

However, due to water shortages nationwide, many states are tapping underground water – from aquifers – to meet their state needs. Much of this water has been stored underground for decades, if not centuries. The longer it has been stored underground, the more minerals it has.

Here's the crux of the matter and where cleaning comes into the picture.

Hard water poses a significant challenge to cleaning solutions because it impairs their performance. This issue is not to be taken lightly. Cleaning professionals are now compelled to use more chemicals to maintain the same level of cleanliness as in the past, a practice that is not only unsustainable but also harmful to the environment.

A better way to address this situation is to turn to methods and technologies that use water more efficiently and sometimes use no water at all. That way, we will not be so dependent on underground water.

We can do this most effectively in restrooms, where many toilets now use far less water than federally mandated, and urinals are being installed that use no water at all.

Efficient water usage is not just a choice; it's a necessity. By using water more efficiently, we can significantly reduce water consumption around the country, and in the process, make it easier to keep facilities clean and healthy.

And here's another compelling reason to rethink our water usage. The new LEED v5 certification program now mandates water efficiency reporting and metering as prerequisites for certification.

In other words, to even be considered for LEED certification, a facility must demonstrate what it is doing to reduce water consumption – a wise first step.
