THINK

THINK

An original thought in an otherwise “shared” society.

I cannot watch the current level of division occurring without trying to bring perspective to it. Many will write this off or be so married to their own views they will deem this vulnerable communication of mine as worthless. Many will also immediately place blame on any viewpoint opposing their own, which is also an incorrect analysis. The acceptance of personal labels within the mass culture is infuriating. Furthermore, the belief that if you fall into one of those labels it automatically prescribes you to a predetermined set of total moral beliefs and notions is the largest fallacy I am witnessing in my life. Even scarier yet, the use of logical fallacies to substantiate one’s views is such an accepted method of communication that one can watch any news channel, both right or left wing, and see it used in almost every discussion. True debate, true logic and an even discussion of views is something I crave as a living, breathing adult. Alas, I have much trouble finding it in today’s “instant” and “free” craving society.

I hope for the moment in future history when we can all discuss our opposing viewpoints, with the understanding that we all want the best for our nation and families. The disagreement of which road to take can be discussed, dissected and rebuilt without distraction by those pulling us apart. And just because someone hits you with a label does not make your opinions any less relevant. I do not want to hear blame, for the blame lies with both extremes pulling at the rope placing the most stress on the majority of us in the middle.

My hope is twofold. First, that every person learns what a logical fallacy is so they can identify those trying to sway them without relevant information. For the “straw man” logical fallacy being delivered through every media outlet is becoming so redundant it is now just accepted as a relevant argument. Second, that we destroy labels as much as possible. Labels are a mechanism being used to divide us, rather than celebrate our differences. Opposing “labels” to your own does not mean you are enemies, it means with proper reason and compromise we have a greater opportunity to find a successful and fruitful outcome. Opposing viewpoints, no matter how extreme must be digested and discussed so long as both parties are open to comprise. That is how our nation was built, and that’s how it will continue to grow.

My two cents. Make it a GREAT day!
