To think outside the box, start with a small box

The recent market turmoil caused by the emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has sent shockwaves through the tech industry.

When the chips are down

This unexpected challenger has demonstrated that innovation can thrive with a leaner approach, emphasizing efficiency and resourcefulness over massive spending. DeepSeek’s success mirrors India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission, which landed on the moon at a fraction of the cost of Hollywood blockbusters like Gravity. Similarly, the rise of low-cost, high-quality mobile phones from companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus disrupted the established smartphone market, proving that flagship features could be accessible to the masses. These examples highlight the potential for frugal innovation to revolutionize industries and challenge traditional power structures.

DeepSeek’s Disruptive Model

DeepSeek’s AI model, developed at a fraction of the cost of its US counterparts, has stunned the tech world. It has achieved remarkable performance while running on less-advanced chips, demonstrating that cutting-edge AI doesn’t necessarily require massive investments in hardware and infrastructure. This frugal approach challenges the prevailing assumption that only big tech companies with deep pockets can compete at the highest level of AI development.

India’s Chandrayaan-3: A Triumph of Frugal Innovation

India’s recent Chandrayaan-3 mission to the moon is another testament to the power of frugal innovation. ??Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission required only?$75 million?— both significantly inexpensive than Hollywood’s $100m sci-fi thriller Gravity. That makes the achievement even more impressive.

The Smartphone Revolution: Frugal Innovation in Action

The rise of companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus further exemplifies the power of frugal innovation. These companies disrupted the smartphone market by offering high-quality devices with flagship features at significantly lower prices than established brands. This approach made cutting-edge technology accessible to a wider audience, forcing industry giants to rethink their pricing strategies and prioritize value. They often claim to offer 90% functionality at a fraction of the cost.

The Future of Innovation

The success of DeepSeek, Chandrayaan-3, and the affordable smartphone revolution suggests that the future of innovation may lie in embracing a more frugal approach. This shift towards frugal innovation could lead to a more equitable and sustainable future, where smaller players can compete with established giants and innovation is accessible to a wider range of individuals and communities.

Conclusion

To think out of the box, the easiest option is to begin with a smaller box. By embracing a more frugal approach, limiting resources and focusing on efficiency, we can unlock new possibilities for innovation and create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

What is college for? It is ONLY about the degree

Beyond the Parchment: The True Measure of a College Education

Picture this: you’re handed your degree certificate the moment you step onto campus. Classes? Exams? Who needs them, right? You’ve already reached the finish line! While this scenario might seem absurd, it highlights a crucial point: the value of a college education extends far beyond the mere acquisition of a degree. In today’s world, where employers increasingly prioritize skills and experience, the traditional “piece of paper” might seem like a relic of the past. But the transformative power of the undergraduate experience remains as potent as ever.

This is the true legacy of a college education. It’s not about the framed certificate or the letters after your name. It’s about the person you become, the resilience you develop, the impact you make on the world. It’s about leaving college with a stronger sense of self, a deeper understanding of the world, and an unshakeable belief in your own potential.

College education is ONLY about the degree. It’s the degree of confidence you gain, empowering you to live a life that goes beyond what you were capable of before you stepped in to college. That’s the only difference that matters.

There is life in every seed however small it may be . All that we need is to provide that simple creative eco system, Cherish and nourish it with patience , passion , faith and wisdom . Constraints should not be allowed to restrain innovation.

Great thoughts. Thanks. In this case perhaps to note the “inversion for innovators” regarding ROI on investment which is a very linear vision of investors. The analogy could be the investment to make a road. No private investment did that which is perhaps the “immature state of economic education”. It is only last few decades that VC’s emerged capable of costing the return from a port or airport. In the case of AI the road was laid by the pioneers who spent billions over years to actually create what LLM’s we see based on the evolution of chips, data of decades ( stolen or taken ) and training chain of thought ( translated by massive computing). Now the next avatars must be seen as just zapping vehicles that are using the road. The wake up call is to perhaps creators of valuation & then investors. Difficult to forecast whats next because AI will disrupt every week with non linear methods to provide answers. Google has spent billions & have been / still are/ will remain the leaders in search but Perplexity is now used by millions who prefer it for their “type of search” So lets expect disruption every week, but differentiate between road builders & vehicles. We are in the era where the last to start has the unfair advantage.

"To think outside the box, the easiest option is to begin with a smaller box." Thank you, Abhijit Bhaduri, for this profound insight. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are right in front of us, yet we overlook them—assuming that a bigger box is always better.

'It’s about the person you become, the resilience you develop, the impact you make on the world. It’s about leaving college with a stronger sense of self, a deeper understanding of the world, and an unshakeable belief in your own potential.' This is so true! I've felt this even when I've taken time to get a certification! However well I knew the subject before that! The value of immersion into the whole experience is tremendous! Thank you for the insight!
