"TNT DNT" is one of my favourite phrases in creativity sessions. TNT stands for 'Think New Things', and DNT stands for 'Do New Things'.
Thinking New Things
When I ask Digital Creators, what is the biggest challenge they face, the most common answer is, "To come up with new blog/content ideas".
Here are some tips on how to boost your creativity and come up with new ideas regularly for creating great content:-
1 Practice mindfulness or any contemplative practice like meditation.
Learn to live in the moment and practice mindfulness. Try a contemplative practice which suits you. You will be surprised to know so many types of contemplation options are available to you. (check out the tree of contemplative practices)
(You can also read my story, “How I regained my lost creativity” for some inspiration)
2 Observation is an under rated skill
Become a keen observer of your environment and human behavior. You will get plenty of ideas for content.
I sometimes feel, "Too many ideas, Too little time".
3 Read and Watch
Austin rightly says, "Your job is to collect ideas. The best way to collect ideas is to read. Read, read, read, read, read. Read the newspaper. Read the weather. Read the signs on the road. Read the faces of strangers. The more you read, the more you can choose to be influenced by."
Watch films in other languages on Netflix.
4 Meet people of new cultures and initiate conversations
Travelling and meeting new people is a great source of creative ideas. I intentionally travel by train at times to talk to new people or co passengers.
5 Find your Creative Mojo
Everyone is creative, but in different ways. Some people are creative with words, some with sounds, some with visuals, and some with integrating all of them.
Have you found your Creative Mojo?
6 Try Permutations and Combinations
I discussed in first episode of this newsletter, (Connecting the Dots) how best creative ideas (or blog topics) come from interdisciplinary areas. So trying new permutations and combinations of related and unrelated concepts is a useful exercise.
Doing New Things
Thinking new things is only the first step. You have to take the second step and put your ideas into action. Here are some tips to get you going:-
1 Put your new ideas into practice. Don't wait for the perfect moment.
2 Experiment regularly and be ready to fail.
Digital creation is all about trial and error, its all about the spirit of experimenting. Fear of failure is one of the biggest enemies of creativity.
3 Try the next step in your journey.
If you have mastered podcasting, then try producing a video. If you have mastered words, then try visual storytelling.
