Think Like The Boss

I often give out the same advice over and over and over again.
Why?
Because new people need it.
Hopefully, you've seen the post I have featured on my profile that walks through what I suggest everyone new to cybersecurity do to get started.
Well, while you are working through those resources, I'm going to challenge you to get into a mindset.
Mindset is huge. Anyone who has studied psychology or meditation, played a sport at the national or international level, or been part of a special operations team knows that mental preparation and mindset preparation are almost as important as preparing your body to succeed.
So how do you prepare your mind to succeed and prosper in cybersecurity?
You need to start thinking about the things that leaders in the industry are concerned with.
You need to hear from CISOs. You need to hear from business leaders. You need to hear from experts.
I start my day with podcasts while I'm walking my dog, feeding the goats, chickens, and ducks, emptying the dishwasher, and getting my coffee ready in the morning.
What am I listening to?

ITSP Magazine has a whole ensemble of podcasts covering all aspects of IT and cybersecurity. Marco and Sean lead off on a few podcasts each week. My friends Phillip Wylie and Jax Scott lead out on their own podcasts on the channel. But Alyssa Miller, Alyssa Knight, and so many others also produce content on the channel. It's my go-to channel.
I also want news. I used to follow Cyberwire's daily but recently switched over to CISO Series Daily because I like the delivery. It's a personal preference. Start with both and then continue to listen to both or pick one. No bad choices except not doing anything.
I also am a big fan of James Azar, who has a couple of channels, but his daily is CyberHub Podcast, which is different from the other dailies I mentioned.
Christophe Foulon has a nice podcast, Breaking into Cyber, that I have really enjoyed.
My person podcast that doesn't have to do with cyber, but I think has changed my life is Daily Stoic and Daily Dad from Ryan Holliday, author of The Daily Stoic. It centers me and helps me focus my mind on what is important to me. Great way to start my day.
A podcast that I used to follow almost religiously but haven't been listening to recently was The Dave Ramsey Channel. It helped me get my spending in check and set long-term goals. But it's really repetitive and I get it. It does work. I'll just say that. You can get a lot done with a small shovel. Then when your shovel gets big, that's a big pile you can use to do the things you want to do.
Ok, I'll link to some of these things in the comments of the post. Let me know if there are other podcasts I need to listen to, as well.

3 年Thank you for this!! I’ve been looking for more podcasts to add to a “Resources” page for a blog I’m putting together to chronicle my journey as a new person looking to get started in the industry. This is invaluable to me.
